1) Today at Noon: New DATE! Study Group: Women in Canada: 50 Years of Change, begins March 2

Fifty years ago, on February 16, 1967, the historic Royal Commission on the Status of Women was launched. Using this landmark Royal Commission as a starting point, the Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the Aboriginal Women’s Association will host a study group on women in Canada. The group will meet bi-weekly in March and April to consider women's equality decade by decade, from 1967-2017.

The study group will ask: What was particularly relevant for women during each 10-year period? How has women's equality advanced in the last 50 years? Which women were left out of consideration and remain underrepresented in decision-making today?

The group will launch Thursday March 2, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. The first session will focus on the years 1967-1977. The study group will be held at the Confederation Centre Public Library in Charlottetown. Kendi Tarichia will bring the perspective of Black Islanders to the first study group discussion.

Mark the dates March 16, and 30; and April 13 and 27 for future study groups in the series. Hosted by Aboriginal Women’s Association of PEI, PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the PEI Public Library Service. For more information, contact 902-368-4510 or info@peistatusofwomen.ca or visit http://peiacsw.wordpress.com

4) Beethoven and Sirens

Sunday, March 5, 2017
2:30pm - 4:30pm
Zion Presbyterian Church
Charlottetown

The Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra (PEISO
) will perform its third concert of the season, entitled “Beethoven and Sirens” at Charlottetown’s Zion Presbyterian Church, at 2:30 pm on Sunday, March 5th. Under the baton of guest conductor Karem J Simon, the concert will feature masterworks by two contemporaries, Gioachino Rossini and Ludwig v. Beethoven. The special guest artist is the award-winning Charlottetown-based women’s choir “Sirens,” so named after the singing femmes fatales of Greek mythology.

The performance will begin with Rossini's An Italian in Algiers Overture, a work that, according to Maestro Simon, is “among his most widely recorded works known for its comedic character.” The sublime voices of PEI’s own female chorus, Sirens, will then collaborate with the PEISO in performing Randall Thompson's cantata, The Place of the Blest -- a work known for its beautiful melodies, uncomplicated
harmonies and simple textures.

Sirens
has developed a strong following of supporters and has been lauded for its pure tone quality, sensitive musicality and tight ensemble. As recipient of several awards at the local and provincial music festivals, the group earned the Richard W. Cooke award at the FCMF National Music Festival, placing first in the Choral Ensemble Class in 2015. That same year, Sirens also received a nomination for Music PEI’s award for Achievement in Classical or Jazz.

During
intermission concert goers can purchase fresh citrus fruit as part of the symphony’s annual fundraiser event. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance through the Confederation Centre box office for $40 and $15 for students. Visit boxoffice.confederationcentre.com or call 1-800-565-0278.

For information about the March 5 concert as well as the last concert of the symphony’s 2016-17 season which features a performance by violin soloist Marc Djokic on April 23, visit PEISO’s new bilingual webpage at www.peisymphony.com or call 892-4333. TICKETS

8) FOOD SOVEREIGNTY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

NURTURING SUSTAINABLE HUMAN AND ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIES IN STORMY TIMES

SATURDAY, MARCH 11
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Milton Community Hall, North Milton

The theme of Cooper Institute’s third annual social justice symposium in
honour of Father Andrew Macdonald is “food sovereignty and climate change; nurturing human and ecological communities in stormy times”, and will feature a presentation by guest speaker, Dr Nettie Wiebe.

While it’s generally understood that climate change has an impact on food production, the opposite is also true. Our current global food system is a significant contributor to climate change. What do we need to do, in a changing climate, to reconfigure our food system to make it more sustainable, and to ensure that everybody has access to enough food?

Several local farmers and environmentalists will respond to Nettie's comments, and we will be treated to some music by Teresa Doyle.

Nettie Wiebe farms near Delisle, Saskatchewan. She served in leadership positions of the National Farmers Union for ten years and was the first woman to lead a national farm organization in Canada. She recently retired from teaching ethics the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Wiebe is an active participant in public discourse on sustainable agriculture and rural communities, trade agreements, women’s equality, human rights, peace, economic and environmental issues and food sovereignty. Her recent publications include co-editing two volumes on food sovereignty and several articles about changing farmland ownership in Canada.

This event is
free, and open to the public. Please register ahead of time by following this link or call Cooper Institute at 902-894-4573, or email ann@cooperinstitute.ca.

11) Reducing Stigma

An Island woman is advocating to overcome the stigma of barrenness for women and families that have experienced this in Canada and around the world. Elizabeth Powers of Charlottetown has produced the following video to outline her request for support from the Government of Canada to share her message of acceptance and care:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_YEQ95V_2c&feature=youtu.be

Elizabeth defines barrenness as the inability of women and men to conceive their children or to successfully produce them, a situation that affects approximately 100 million couples worldwide.
