March is Women’s History Month

The theme of National Women’s History Month 2017 is "Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business. The website devoted to this celebration explains, “The 2017 theme for National Women’s History Month honors women who have successfully challenged the role of women in both business and the paid labor force. Women have always worked, but often their work has been undervalued and unpaid.”

Another way of honoring these achievements is to look at the lives and expectations of women of a historical time period, such as 17th century England, to show how far society has come. Rare books in our collections can assist with this. For example, Richard Brathwaite’s advice book, The EnglEnglish Gentlewomanish Gentlewoman (1631), lays out the often confining expectations of upper class women of the period with regards to speech, behavior, etiquette, clothing and dress. The only work roles mentioned are those pertaining to the family and household, but he does assume that women of this class will often be in society and conversing. Regarding speech, Braithwaite gives rules for propriety and appropriate subjects. He believes women should be educated to speak to people “of all places,” but also remarks, “Silence in a Woman, is a moving Rhetoricke.”

Though often reinforcing these sentiments, another book from the period, Gervase Markham’s The English House-wife (1637), provides a glimpse into the “undervalued and unpaid” work of women. In addition to the expected roles of the housewife, there are some influential ones you may not have considered. For example, especially in the country-side where the nearest doctor or apothecary might be a day’English Housewifes carriage ride away, the housewife often acted as a kind of domestic physician, concocting preventative and curative medicines and treating the sick in her household and community. Women were aided in this process by domestic medical guides geared towards their needs, such as Markham’s book, which was largely derived from a manuscript belonging to Lady Francis, Countess Dowager of Exeter.

It is certainly true that women have always worked and have always played important roles in society. Women’s History Month is about “Writing Women Back into History,” which can only be properly done by researching the whole story, the women who broke down barriers as well as understanding what those barriers were.
