This month at SDC

Though February is one of the shortest months on the books, it is not short on learning here at the Karenni Social Development Center. This month saw another busy time of studying English, Computer, Human Rights, Gender Perspectives, Environmental Rights, Rule of Law, Democracy, and the Social Sciences.
February is a very important month for our Basic Course. It is our last full month of learning before we start final exams and graduation preparation. We are focused on producing our most advanced work, and doing a comprehensive review of what we have learned over the last 9 months.
Inside camp we are busy recruiting for the 2017-18 Basic Course and the 2017 Advanced Community Management Training Course; both of which start in June. Principal Khu Myar Reh recruits for the 2017-18 Basic Course that will start in June and run for roughly 10 months, until their graduation in 2018. Students at the high school inside Karenni Camp 1 hear about the program, and find out the process for applying, testing, and acceptance. Just over 50 students will be chosen to take part in KSDC's Basic Course.

Teacher Pa Pa Mo lives inside Karenni Refugee Camp 1. She is not only the teacher for Gender Perspectives, she lives with the students in the boarding house for those who are here at KSDC without their family close by. Thank you Pa Pa Moe for your dedication and hard work.

Teacher Tasha started teaching with us in mid January. She loves teaching at SDC so much that she has decided to stay with us through the end of May. We are grateful to have such an enthusiastic and gifted teacher decide to extend her stay here for a few months longer.

Teacher Martha has been teaching with us since January. She was only planning on volunteering for a month, but as the story goes, she just couldn't help but wanting to stay. She will be here until Basic Course Graduation on the 29th of March. We are lucky to have kept her a bit longer.

Our Volunteer Coordinator Matt introduces the family tree and characters for our Friday movie; The Lion King! Every Friday we watch a movie in English, with English subtitles, so students can practice listening to and reading English in a non-classroom environment.

These two pictures (above and below) may look like a beautiful anomaly of nature. In reality they are evidence of a tainted water source vital to the community. We discovered someone had dumped paint into the river, and all over the rocks. Keeping the community from utilizing this precious resource, and damaging the ecosystem that sustains life in the river.

Our garden (above and below) is ever-expanding, ever-fruitful, and ever-abundant. The students work hard keeping this plot planted, watered, and safe from our seed stealing chickens. There seems to be a new edition to our fresh produce each week, and therefore to our deliciously fresh student prepared meals.
