Oscar Win for The White Helmets
The White Helmets documentary directed by Orlando von Einsiedel was the winner in the Best Short Documentary category at the 2017 Oscars ceremony on 26 February. The Netflix movie follows volunteers from the 2016 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Syria Civil Defence in the chaos of war-torn Syria, as they risk their lives to rescue survivors from underneath the rubble. Raed Al Saleh, Executive Director of Syria Civil Defence, will attend the 15th International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights taking place in Geneva from 10-19 March where another film about the White Helmets, Last Men in Aleppo, will be screened as the closing film of this year’s festival.

Mozn Hassan Calls for Universal Women Rights Review at the UN
Egyptian women rights’ defender Mozn Hassan has called on the UN Human Rights Council to step up its watchdog role in protecting the rights of women around the world and especially in the Middle East and North Africa where violations are widespread. Hassan, who shared the 2016 Right Livelihood Award with her organisation Nazra for Feminist Studies, addressed the high-level segment of the Council convening in Geneva on 1 March via video as she is banned from international travel and her assets are frozen. “Throughout the Middle East and North Africa, women human rights defenders are subjected to a wide range of violations — from enforced disappearances and sexual violence to second-class citizenship and denial of basic rights. The Human Rights Council can and should create a means to ensure regular scrutiny of a state’s commitment," Hassan said.

Johan Galtung Shares His Vision of Peace
1987 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Johan Galtung is known around the world as 'the father of peace studies'.  Earlier this year, he received Dr Honoris Causa from Universidad Madrid Complutense. In his acceptance speech published by TRANSCEND Media Service, Prof. Galtung reflects on his 'Treat the cause, not the symptom' approach to dealing with war and violence: "My illness was war, my wellness was peace. Was war a cause with horrible effects with nobody really winning, or could war be a symptom of something deep down in the 'body politic', a 'root cause'? Of something preceding war and violence in general, which if removed would also remove, or at least reduce, war and violence? But what?" In this latest video, he shares his vision of peace.

Laureate Nnimmo Bassey Talks Green Capitalism in Oslo
"Green was once a colour. Today it has turned into a silencing code that lulls us into accepting that Nature cannot be protected unless financial value is placed on her," argued 2010 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Nnimmo Bassey at the Ecological Challenges Conference 2017 held in Oslo, Norway on 15 February. In his keynote address, he discusses how we can effect a system change and transition towards 'a Life-Sustaining Society' – a society in which humans and the environment are linked, not ranked.
