News and Updates on Regular Issue Notes
We have several new items, and I'm especially pleased with the two new Macedonian notes:
200 denari and
2,000 denari. They weren't easy to track down for some reason. Also difficult to find were the 2 new Indian notes:
500 rupees and
2,000 rupees. I also have the new
Nicaraguan commemorative note, the beautiful (albeit expensive)
100 pound note from Gibraltar, the new
Scottish 5 pound note (Bank of Scotland issue - not the
RBS one that we have had for a while). Interestingly, both Scottish notes are
2016 Banknote of the Year nominees (more on this later). Finally, we received the redesigned
Nepal 50 rupee with the snow leopard on the back now, and the beautifully redesigned
1000 rupiah from Indonesia. (NB: I did manage to pick up a few
replacement notes too on this one).
I think that is it for the new issues and of course many are featured here, and you can always just check out the "
latest additions page" for the ones that we didn't have room to feature.
As you know, this can be the busy time for new issues, albeit many are still just new date/signature issues as is the case with the new issues from Denmark, Philipppines, Jamaica, Bangladesh. We will have the following new issues by the next newsletter including:
- the two new Zimbabwe notes (2 & 5 Dollars)
- the new commemorative Kazakhstan 10,000 Tenge.
I have also heard that Uzbekistan will be issuing a new 10,000 sum note sometime this year. No date was given, but this will be the largest denomination they have ever issued surpassing the 5,000 sum note. There is also news that Mexico will be introducing a new 100 peso note to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Mexican constitution.
We have been very busy in 2017 buying new notes. Most of them are up, but we still have a way to go. The bulk of the remaining inventory are older circulated notes and "
One Only Banknotes." Make sure you check out this section. We've listed the older notes at great prices and they make nice fillers in your collections until you find it in a better grade and have the budget to upgrade. I did this a lot when I first started collecting, and it was a nice way to build an interesting little collection on a budget. It also helped me determine which note I wanted to pay a lot out for in a better grade.
Thank you all so much, I am so grateful to all of you, not only for your continued support and purchases, but also to the continued interest in these "sleep aids/newsletters". It is so nice to know that most of you seem to enjoy getting these (or don't have time to unsubscribe) Thank you again, I can't say this enough - Robert
New Feature, Updates & Member Account News
on the Website
No new updates, but I did want to mention again a feature that I hope is helpful to members, as I am not sure if we have mentioned this before (it has been available for some time)
There is a facility on the website for you to view past purchase on your account.
We mentioned late last year about a new shopping cart; I am afraid at the moment we are no further forward. Time is one factor, but as it is such a critical element we want to make sure we get it right. We are not giving up, but it may be longer to put together than we had anticipated. We will keep you updated though.
If you are not yet a member,
please feel free to sign up to the site. Remember it automatically gives you a 5% discount on all orders.

Notes on Featured Notes on list - Written by Katie and Pop I was slacking this week - had to have assistance!
Macedonia
This note is incredible, and I believe will be a fast seller. The clay drawing featured on the note is actually a 6-7th century Christian terracotta icon from Vinica in Macedonia. It shows the two warriors Joshua and Caleb wearing armor, holding spears and shield, illustrating the story from The Book of Joshua in the Old Testament when Joshua stops the sun over Gibeon and the moon over the valley of Aijalon, before the victory of the Israelites over the Amorites. The note itself is spectacularly colorful with a beautiful design, as I mentioned before an incredible note.
Indonesia
Another colorful note from Indonesia. We also have a few replacement notes that have an X prefix and it is sometimes interesting to have a replacement note instead of/as well as the regular note. Anyway, this is a nice looking note and a nice update/change in design for the Indonesia 1,000 rupiah note.
(see the previous 1,000 rupiah note)
India
I know there was a lot of buzz about the introduction of a high value 2,000 rupee note from India (
see note) and it is a great looking colorful note. However, I actually think this 500 rupee is a nice note too - I think it is interesting that they use Gandhi's glasses (Swachh Bharat logo - Gandhi’s eyeglasses) as part of the design.
Scotland
Another banknote of the year nominee for Scotland! I suppose creating beautiful banknotes is gaining a high reputation in Scotland, right up there with whisky and shortbread cookies (well maybe in the banknote community at least). Another great issue from the Bank of Scotland.
Just as an aside, there are actually 2 Scottish notes nominated for 2016 banknote of the year award - this one and one issued by Royal Bank of Scotland (
see this note) I believe this is the first time a country has had 2 nominations. Albeit by different issuing banks.
Sweden
Back in stock: This 2016 banknote of the year nominee had been sold out for a while but we are happy to have it back in stock on the website. It is a great looking note, and of course for us older persons (my daughter says - who is this woman on the note), we all remember the beautiful actress Greta Garbo - I would also go so far as to say that this could be the first film star to feature on a banknote (now I just opened myself up to lots of emails, pointing out other film stars on notes?)
Brazil
I think I may have said this many times before, but this was a note that I had a few bundles of, and when I sold the last one I was amazed at how well it has sold. Sometimes when you have a lot of a note you don't really notice the notes selling, and it is a shock when you get to the last one. Anyway, it is now back in and if you haven't already picked this one up, it is an interesting note for your collection.
Nepal
Nepal have a few new notes being issued recently, and I should have them in time for the next newsletter, hopefully. They are similar on the front featuring of course Mt. Everest, but the backs have a few changes. This one is a nice change as it now features a snow leopard (the previous issue featured a "Tahr") My daughter did notice that it seems to be a well fed snow leopard and it reminded her a little of her "fat" cat. Of course, her cat doesn't like the snow, like this cat seems to.
Gibraltar
What an amazingly stunning note from Gibraltar and I am sure will be a nomination for the 2017 banknote of the year.
The coloration and design is interesting (Look at the script used for the "G") and I like the way the window hologram depicts the Queen. It has been mentioned by several people in the banknote world that it seems a shame in one way that some of the most beautiful notes are the high denomination (high cost) notes. I am in two minds with this - I would definitely love to see notes like this being issued that are 1 pound or 5 pound (it is good to see the English and Scottish fivers so nicely designed) and are more in the reach of most collectors budget. However, a little part of me thinks that this sort of exclusiveness does make a note like this worth saving for and one that really stands out in a collection. If anyone has thoughts on this I would love to hear them (I may not be able to reply - but maybe I could, with permission, put a few of these thoughts on future newsletters) Anyway, I digress and at the end of the day (which it nearly is for me) this is a note that would make a wonderful addition to, and enhance any collection.
Other Interesting Items ..
I was intrigued to see that these banknotes all had the same serial number. At first my thought was that they were maybe not genuine or that they were an error. However, it turns out that when these notes were printed in 1946, the system for sequentially numbering notes didn't always work as it should and many notes went out with the same serial number. This is something I have never seen before. We also, in the bundle of notes we purchased, did also find 3 other notes that all had the same serial number (
see this listing).
I thought I would share this here, and I do need to do some more research on how common this, but I can only think it was these 10 Yen notes in this series where it happened. It is hard to imagine how they got out into circulation and while the printing methods from this period was amazing, it shows that errors did happen and get missed in QA.

Fun Notes
I wanted to feature this interesting set that I purchased them at the FUN show . I only brought a few sets because I wasn't sure if it would be of interest to customers so I decided to list them individually instead of selling them as a set. Most of these notes sold out quickly of course proving that I should have purchased more.
Now hereby hangs a tale (not a tall tale); when I went to buy more, they were sold out. I though to myself what an idiot I was not to buy more when I had the chance. Well, I did end up getting very lucky, as I managed through Tom, the US State note designer, to buy the Roman banknote creator's remaining 10 sets.
I say all this because these notes will probably be hard to find in the near future. That's why I am featuring there here; not only to show how I can get things very wrong, but to give you a chance to pick them up before they do sell out completely.
I noticed my daughter managed to put a few sets together that have the same serial number. Wwe like to do this with fun note sets when we can as we have with the
Eklisivia and
Sima Senco banknotes. So I hope you like this set and of course, after looking at these notes more closely, I can actually see they are a great creation. My only excuse at the show was I had seen so many beautiful FUN notes, that I just didn't examine this as closely as I should have done; a lesson learned I think.

I wanted to run this one more time, as I have been talking to Tom about when we can expect the last two issues for 2016 and when will we start getting the 2017 issues.
Tom got back to me and he now has his new computer up and running so he can start some design work. However, for the next series he is working on "new raised ink" technology. I am not sure exactly what that is, but it sounds very technical to me. Suffice to say, this new technology should enhance the look of notes, but means that it may now be May or June before we see the new issues. The good news is that he should be able at the same time he issue five of the new 2017 notes.
This should put us back on track, and Tom is very cognitive that the delays are not desirable, but as I have learned (not as quickly as I should have) that banknote artists are every bit as much perfectionists as most other artists. Which in one way is a good thing and the reason these notes are so amazingly good, and so collectible. The quality is on par with notes issued by most top banknote printers (and using the same up to the minute technology)

A nice fun note from Israel. I don't think I have ever seen a fun note for this country before (of course I could be wrong - and probably am - my wife says even when I am right, I am wrong for being right).
Still a neat little fun note and ne that would definitely make a nice additon to any fun note collection.

Other Notes of Note
Sadly, I could only find one of these notes at the FUN show. I think this is an amazing note and while it is graded at aUNC, it is a nice example of this beautiful note. I sometimes get asked about certain notes and why they are so hard to find (buy) and I can't always answer the question, but I personally think that certain notes have such amazing ascetics and coloration/depictions, especially notes with birds on them, that at the time of issue the note was not really appreciated, but over time people have seen the note and then want to buy it. By this time most UNC notes have been put into circulation, and notes in such good grade (UNC/aUNC) become hard to find and this increases the prices and scarcity.
As always, the first peron to buy will get the note, so PLEASE do accept my apologies if you miss out, but I promise this is one note I do actively look for and buy when I can.
