Welcome to Your Newsletter for March

Today we launch our 40 for 40 Lent campaign to support the foodbank and we honour the great work the Church reps and wardens do in supporting us.  As always we are appealing for volunteers, if you would like to know more about what a volunteer gets involved in then please see our insight from Trustee Mike Bailey. If you have any feedback on the newsletter or articles for inclusion please contact Jayne at newsletter@barrowfoodbank.org.uk

Foodbank Update

What we did in February:

We fed 587 people of which 384 were adults and 203 were children.

We received 2980.8kgs food

We gave out 6265.1kgs food

With people struggling to afford food living locally, it is important that we continue to support families in crisis throughout the Easter period. We provide essential emergency food, emotional support and practical advice to local families who really need us.

We are asking people to join us in taking small actions to transform lives by giving up 40 pence for 40 days. With the addition of Gift Aid this comes to £20.  Or if you feel like challenging yourself to give something up during this period, why not donate the cost of what you save to the foodbank.

At the end of Lent on 13th April donate the money you’ve raised to the foodbank – details of how to this this and the gift aid form can be found here: www.barrow.foodbank.org.uk/2017/02/11/lent/

A Kind Thank You!

Barrow foodbank gives out Christmas hampers to clients and presents to the children with no expectations of acknowledgement so it was lovely to receive a thank you card from one of the young people who received a gift.  It reads, "Dear foodbank, Thank you for the food you gave us at Christmas. Thank you for the lovely presents for me and my sister’s.  You were very kind."

Trustee Insight from Mike Bailey

I first volunteered around four years ago at the age of 75. At Ann’s request I was a “male presence” in the drop-in.  I knew nothing about foodbanks until ours was set up, and I had some misgivings as to the need. But seeing desperate people coming to get food because of the sort of poverty I didn’t know existed soon erased all my doubts.

As the foodbank warehouse extended into the cellar, I helped out by installing extra lighting and power sockets. I now spend my time inputting voucher data onto the Trussel Trust database, and helping out at Tesco collections.

When the minister of the Baptist church moved away, I took his place as a trustee, representing Churches Together in Barrow. I accepted this with some trepidation as in all my working life I had never been in management, let alone a company director! However, the other trustees welcomed me and we have an excellent working relationship. As a member of the church I often liaise with the minister and diaconate with my “Trustee hat” on.

My wife volunteers in the warehouse so we are a foodbank family, and hope that in some small way we are not wasting our retirement, volunteering at the foodbank is a means of putting something back into the community, and it is much more satisfying than sitting at home watching daytime TV!

We Honour Our Church Reps

The unsung heroes of Barrow Foodbank are the churches who donate faithfully and regularly and the church reps that bring the food to the foodbank.  When we opened in July 2012, it was the churches that helped us collect the 3 tonnes we needed before we could open.  As soon as we had collected the food and we were to open, we had a flood in the warehouse and lost all our sugar and pasta.  We put the flood on face book and within the half hour, we had people arriving to help us clean up and the sugar and pasta were replaced.  The faithful and regular donations underpin the work of the foodbank and whenever we are running short of stock items, they always respond.

The church reps also bring us cash donations from parishioners for the purchase of food or towards the running expenses of the food bank.  Thank you to all who have donated. Bethany Church, Ulverston has been extremely generous in providing us the use of the church hall and facilities free of charge.  They built a wall of doors to provide space for the stock kept there.

Last year Abbey Road Baptist Church hosted a BBQ to say thank you to the volunteers of the foodbank and we thank them for their hospitality. Many of our church reps also help us with the Tesco Collections as well.

This month we want to honour our churches and church reps and say a very big thank you for all you do.

Ulverston will be getting a landline phone on the 5th March.  We will be posting the phone number on the web page and facebook after the 5th March.

Your Foodbank Needs You!

Have you got 2 hours to spare?  Would you be interested in volunteering with Barrow Foodbank?

If so we have vacancies to work in our drop-in centre welcoming clients to the foodbank, offering them a hot drink and something to eat and giving them their food allocation that has been previously packed by warehouse volunteers.

Alternatively you may wish to work in the warehouse where you receive the donated food, thank the donor, weigh and date the food.  The food then is sorted into the warehouse to ensure that no food goes out of date, finally the food is packed into boxes ready to be given out.

Why not pay us a visit and we will show you around and answer any questions you may have, we are a happy team and you would have all the support you need.
