Edinburgh Imaging facilities opened by HRH Princess Royal


On 14th February, two new Edinburgh Imaging facilities were opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal at the Queen's Medical Research Institute (QMRI) and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE). More details...

Imaging Team of the Year nomination for Edinburgh

Media coverage and public engagement from SINAPSE researchers


A clinical trial of stem cell therapy for disabled stroke patients led by Prof Keith Muir from the University of Glasgow was featured in the recent BBC documentary "Andrew Marr: My Brain and Me". More details (and link to video)...

Dr Akira O'Connor from the University of St Andrews recently participated in the Quiz a Whiz series produced by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, answering questions submitted by school pupils on the topic of déjà vu. The video episode is available to watch online.

Innovate UK funding calls


Innovate UK funds and supports business-led innovation for the purpose of economic growth, with academics viewed as valued partners in the innovation landscape. The UK Government recently announced an additional £4.7 billion to be invested in science and innovation by 2020-21; consequently, researchers should be aware of a substantial increase in grant funding via Innovate UK.

Two of four 'sector groups' that Innovate UK has established for current and future funding calls are likely to be of interest to SINAPSE researchers:
  • Health and life sciences (competition now open, with 12 April application deadline; themes include precision medicine - including improved imaging techniques - and preclinical technologies - including biomarker discovery and development platforms)
  • Emerging and enabling technologies (competition will open 6 March, with 10 May application deadline; themes include emerging technologies - including cutting-edge imaging technologies - and digital - including machine learning, and data analytics)
To be eligible for Innovate UK grants, projects must involve at least one UK small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). If you are part of a consortium applying for Innovate UK funding, or if you are interested but need help identifying industry partners, please e-mail kristin.flegal@glasgow.ac.uk

MIUA 2017 deadline extended


The 2017 Medical Image Understanding and Analysis Conference (MIUA) will take place in Edinburgh from 11th-13th July 2017. Its goals are the dissemination and discussion of research in medical image processing and analysis and aims to encourage the growth and raise the profile of this multi-disciplinary field.

The submission deadline has been extended until the 10th March 2017 for technical papers and 31st March 2017 for clinical abstracts. More details...

Image of the Month: White matter hyperintensities

Our March Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr David Alexander Dickie, shows white matter hyperintensities (blue) in structural brain MRI from a middle-aged participant in the UK Biobank study. White matter hyperintensities (WMH) often occur as we get older but also represent an increased risk for early stroke, dementia, and death. However, many people live long and healthy lives in the presence of WMH and so researchers across SINAPSE are working to better understand this process and how to limit its potentially negative impact.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Islem Rekik

Islem Rekik has recently joined the University of Dundee as a research assistant professor (lecturer) within Computing. As a SINAPSE funded PhD student, she received her PhD degree in "Neuroimaging and Computer Sciences" in 2014 from the University of Edinburgh. She then took a position as a postdoctoral research scholar in modelling and predicting infant brain development at the University of North Carolina, IDEA lab, USA. Her areas of expertise relate to cross-disciplinary fields such as neuroimaging, machine learning, computer vision and signal processing and analysis. Dr Rekik has conducted diverse research projects at the heart of brain development and ageing, brain disease and disorder diagnosis (e.g., ischemic stroke, high and low-grade gliomas) 3D and 4D shape analysis, morphing and evolution prediction as well as image analysis and prediction based on advanced deep machine learning techniques using medical images (e.g., MRI). Her current research aims to infuse advanced machine-learning and computer vision methods into big neuroimaging and signal data analysis for improving healthcare and well-being. Particularly, she is interested in understanding both normal and abnormal brain development and aging, as well as modelling and predicting brain diseases and disorders evolution (e.g., stroke, tumors, Alzheimer's disease). In addition to her international research network connecting the USA, China and Tunisia, she is currently working on building a dense research network within the UK through establishing new collaborations with different Scottish and UK research groups.
