Fair funding for schools

Haringey Council leader Claire Kober has thrown her support behind a national campaign – led by parents in the borough – calling on the government to reconsider plans for a new education funding formula, which could see local schools lose more than 10 percent of their annual budgets.

Parents, teachers, governors and councillors fear the new funding approach could undermine the hard work being done across Haringey to ensure the borough is home to some of the very best schools in the country.

A copy of Cllr Kober’s letter to local headteachers can be seen here.

Wireless Festival

Finsbury Park will play host to the Wireless Festival again this summer, on the weekend of 7-9 July.

Headliners Chance the Rapper, the Weeknd and local lad Skepta will lead the three-day music extravaganza.

Money the council makes from hiring part of Finsbury Park out for Wireless is ploughed back into park maintenance and improvements across the borough.

The council will be working closely with concert organisers to ensure the event runs smoothly and disruption to local residents is kept to a minimum.

More information about Wireless can be found on our website.

An organic future for Wolves Lane

Organic food cooperative OrganicLea is set to take over Haringey’s Wolves Lane Horticultural Centre – where it will offer volunteering opportunities, a chance to learn new skills and a community “veg box” scheme.

The organisation has a wealth of experience in running similar schemes, and is committed to ensuring that Wolves Lane flourishes as a community hub.

Greener energy to light up Tottenham

Pioneering plans to generate low-cost, low-carbon heat and energy for thousands of homes and businesses in north Tottenham have been agreed by the council.

The ambitious council-owned District Energy Network (DEN) will bring more affordable energy to around 5,000 new homes planned as part of major regeneration at High Road West and Northumberland Park – and could even power the development around the new £600m Tottenham Hotspur stadium, which will include housing, a hotel and an extreme sports centre.

The DEN is part of the council’s ongoing Haringey 40:20 commitment to cut local carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2020.

Bar loses appeal over late licence

A bar that stayed open beyond its hours and caused noise problems for neighbours has lost its late licence following a ruling by Highbury magistrates.

The Pride of Tottenham, also known as N17 Lounge, had appealed against the council’s decision to move closing time forward from 4am to 12.30am on weekends and 11.30pm Sunday to Thursday, but it was upheld this week.

The bar, in High Road, Tottenham, must also have extra security on Spurs match days.
