CUPE rejects Canadian Hearing Society’s proposal, impacting Deaf and hard of hearing clients
Canadian Hearing Society

March 5, 2017, Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) has been working diligently, since January 12, 2017 and through this weekend, to achieve a collective agreement with CUPE 2073, the local representing CHS’s unionized employees. This evening, talks broke down when CUPE 2073 walked out of negotiations and declared a strike across the province starting at 7:00 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017.

CHS’s goal is to achieve a collective agreement that is sustainable and ensures a financially responsible and accountable organization.

New test uncovers early hidden hearing loss
Healthy Hearing

Researchers at the University of Connecticut have developed a new test to identify a specific, potential manifestation of hidden hearing loss in individuals whose standard hearing evaluations reveal normal or close to normal findings. The test, which may one day help hearing healthcare professionals identify early stages of hearing loss, detects deficits in the binaural auditory processing system, a complex system involving both ears and the brain in locating sounds and navigating noisy environments.

This outcome is the first in a series of a larger project focusing on binaural hearing conducted by Leslie R. Bernstein, professor of neuroscience and surgery and Constantine Trahiotis, emeritus professor of neuroscience and surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center. The two researchers have been colleagues for nearly 40 years and are considered leaders in the field of binaural auditory research. The results of their study were published in the November 2016 online issue of The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

New Hearing Assistance System at The Gladstone
The Gladstone Theatre (Ottawa)

Hard of hearing theatre fans will be in for an aural treat the next time they take in a show at The Gladstone Theatre. A new wireless assistive listening system from Williams Sound for hard of hearing patrons as been installed at The Gladstone.

The FM transmitter system is compatible with an brand of hearing aid that has a tele-coil setting. Patrons without hearing aids may use a headset, earbuds or bring their own headphones to plug into the small wireless receivers.

It all was made possible thanks to a donation by longtime theatre patrons Harvey and Louise Glatt, who have in the past made similar donations to the Great Canadian Theatre Company and the National Arts Centre to upgrade their respective assistive listening systems.

"Many people don't come to the theatre, because they think they won't be able to hear," said Mr. Glatt. "But this might open it up for a lot of people to come back and give it a shot."

The Gladstone now has eight units to assist patrons who are hard of hearing, available right now for the current production of Phantom of the Opry, and beyond!

Stem Cell Therapy Could Reverse Hearing Loss
Seeker

Humans have about 15,000 inner ear-hair cells, each one picking up sound vibrations, converting them to electric signals and sending them to the brain for processing.
Over time, loud noise, medications and old age combine to kill these cells — and their microscopic hairs called stereocilia — which leads to hearing loss. Unlike other animals, however, humans and mammals can't regrow them. But a group of scientists based in Boston say they've figured out a way to switch on the body's cellular factories and possibly reverse hearing loss.

Toronto lawyer demands more in-flight movies for deaf people
Metro News
Toronto lawyer Joe Sussman says he is waiting on a satisfactory response to a complaint lodged on Air Canada's Facebook page. If one doesn't come, he might go to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.
---

Forget about flying first class — Joe Sussman still feels like a second-class citizen on airplanes.

The Toronto lawyer, who was born deaf, has been demanding Air Canada improve closed captioning on in-flight movies for more than four years.

“It’s insulting,” he said. “People with disabilities are being deprived of a service that should be given to everyone equally.”

His most recent complaint was sparked by a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica earlier this month on Air Canada’s low-cost carrier, Rouge.

Sussman, 32, who regained some hearing at 13 thanks to cochlear implants, took the trip in part to rejuvenate after complications derailed a recent operation to replace the aging implants.

Completely deaf again for the first time in almost 20 years, Sussman shuffled through the movie and TV shows on the airline’s free app, installed on his iPad. After trying more than a dozen, he gave up when none came equipped with closed captioning or subtitles.

Changing Cochleas – Part 1: “Why a CI?”
Hearing Health Matters

It was time. On January 12, 2017, I received my cochlear implant (CI) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. This was a huge step—one I had never expected to take in my lifelong pursuit of better communication.

This article is the first in a series called “Changing Cochleas”. The series starts with my decision to have a cochlear implant and continues with the surgery experience and through the rehabilitation process.
As a writer about hearing loss, the brand of my hearing aids has seldom been relevant to my writing. But unlike hearing aid manufacturers, cochlear implant organizations not only produce the technology but also play an important role in helping recipients successfully adjust to the implant. So, the story of my CI experience is also about the brand I chose, Cochlear. I know many people who have happily and successfully chosen to be implanted with other brands of CI technology.

The best listening skills won’t help your untreated hearing loss
Healthy Hearing

“Listen once in awhile. It’s amazing what you can hear.”  - Anonymous

It’s been said that listening and hearing are two different senses -- listening is a voluntary act while hearing is an involuntary process.
Yet if you’re one of the millions of Americans whose sense of hearing has been damaged, your ability to listen can be profoundly affected, no matter how hard you try.

Hearing vs. listening
Receptors in the cochlea, where tiny hair cells busily translate pitches and frequencies into electrical impulses. From there these impulses travel along the auditory nerve to the brain where they are interpreted as recognizable sound.
