Gateway School

Dear Parents

Take One Picture Week is always such an uplifting experience around the school. As you walk around, the picture was on display in so many different rooms and the learning experiences that the Gateway staff have organised are so creative and varied.  The exhibition will be another fine example of the talent and strength of the pupils across the curriculum. I do hope that many parents and families will be able to visit our School Open Morning on Saturday 11th March. Your children are keen to show you around the impressive Take One Picture exhibition and to tour you around their school, so that you can share in their successes and their enthusiasm.

Year 2 learn about Georgian England

It’s Take One Picture week and Year 2 have been fascinated by all they are learning about Georgian England. They particularly enjoyed looking at Georgian clothes and trying on an outfit, noting how much easier it was to run around in their own clothes.

Year 4 get into role as a Graham!

A wide range of intriguing questions were generated when Year 4 first saw the painting, ‘The Graham Children,’ chosen for our 2017 ‘Take One Picture’ week.  These gave us a great stimulus, providing many cross curricular learning opportunities.

Year 5 draw inspiration from Hogarth's caged finch

In Art this week the children are beginning to understand how artists are able to produce paintings on a large scale starting from smaller sketches. Hogarth’s painting is life-sized and would certainly have started with many preliminary sketches of the family.

What a joy it is to be part of this exciting week at school! The children are buzzing with questions, facts and imaginings about the four children who lived long ago in a house in Pall Mall in the 18th century. They have thought how the children might have entertained themselves with a bird organ, wheeled their baby brother in a fabulous go-cart and been delighted by their pet goldfinch and cat.

World Book Day and Usborne

On Thursday 2nd March all children will take home their WBD £1.00 voucher. These can be exchanged for one of the books in this year's selection or can be used with an Usborne order for the children who joined in the Ready Steady Read event.

The books for this year are:

Peppa loves World Book Day
Everyone loves underpants
Princess Mirror-Belle and Snow White
The Famous Five - Good old Timmie
Where's Wally - The fantastic journey
Horrid Henry funny fact files
Butterfly beach by Jacqueline Wilson
Davis Walliams' World Book Day

On Friday 3rd March the children from throughout the school are invited to dress up in a full costume or with a prop to represent a character drawn by Axel Scheffler. He has drawn many of the illustrations for Julia Donaldson's stories but, beware, not all of them. This link will help with your choice.

Please can your child bring in the book they are representing if they have it, named of course.

The theme of illustrators, and in particular Axel Sheffler, will be studied in a variety of ways during next week in class and in the Library.

The Ready Steady Read has raised £1,242 with 70 children taking part.  Next week the Usborne Rep will be giving order forms to the children who participated. These will need to be back in school by MARCH 8th.

U11 Netball v Pipers Corner

A fantastic Netball match for both teams against Pipers Corner. A very competitive performance from the Gateway girls showing sheer determination and great team work. I was very impressed with their play in a very fast moving game. Both teams won and the players of the match were Abi H and Amber C. Well done girls a fantastic achievement.
