Next week, our partners at NEDA are leading National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Our data team took a look at some of the trends we see around eating disorders:
  • Texters who mention eating disorders also tend to talk about (in order of relevance):
    • Depression
    • Stress
    • Self-harm
    • Anxiety
    • Suicide
  • Nationally, talk about eating disorders peaks on Tuesdays and Sundays 8PM - 10PM
  • On a state level, texters in AR, NJ, and ME mention eating disorders at the highest rates

II. Heroes

Cailey has been a Crisis Counselor for over a year! She loved the training and uses her active listening and collaborative problem solving skills to help friends.

How did you learn about Crisis Text Line?
I heard of Crisis Text Line through To Write Love On Her Arms. Then, I watched Nancy's TED Talks and I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I was so excited to help people, and the fact that I could do it being only 19 was awesome. There's not a lot of opportunities when you're young.

What is your favorite thing about being a Crisis Counselor?
My favorite thing about being a Crisis Counselor for Crisis Text Line is the amazing community. I was surprised when I realized how involved the staff is, and how supportive they are of the volunteers. I also love the other Crisis Counselors. A few of us realized that we're from the same area, and we got together to do a walk for suicide prevention. No matter what you want to talk about, someone is always there to have a conversation.

What is the best thing you've learned as a Crisis Counselor?
The best thing I've learned as a Crisis Counselor is how everyone is different. The word crisis differs person by person, so no two crises are the same. I've learned different approaches to help people, and that it may take more than one approach to really help a texter.

Random fact about me: In 2017, one of my goals is to visit a library in a different city every month. I love public spaces and books, so libraries are a confluence of some of my favorite things. Let’s be honest - I spend half my weekends in libraries already; this goal is to push me to at least travel to visit bookshelves.
