New Report Highlights How Neighborhoods Affect How You Age

A growing body of research shows that living in disadvantaged neighborhoods—characterized by high poverty—is associated with weak social ties, problems accessing health care and other services, reduced physical activity, health problems, mobility limitations, and high stress. It is not only the economic characteristics of neighborhoods that affect health—but also aspects of the physical or “built” environment that promote walkability and foster interaction. Certain neighborhoods that are less accessible are particularly challenging for older adults with disabilities. AGE-FRIENDLY OUTDOOR SPACES & BUILDINGS RESOURCES

Safe Routes to Parks Action Framework

As outlined in our Parks Workshop last year, ensuring safe access to outdoor spaces is key to providing livable, age-friendly communities. But not all communities are equipped with the resources needed to provide safe access to parks, such as investing in new sidewalks and crosswalks with personal safety improvements. A new Safe Routes to Parks Action Framework developed by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in collaboration with the Safe Routes to School National Partnership provides evidence- and practice-based guidance to help local park and recreation agencies implement policies and practices that create safe and equitable access to parks for all people. It is a good resource to complement our Miami-Dade's Age-Friendly Parks Toolkit. Adults living within a half-mile of a park visit parks and exercise more often. Proximity to parks is consistently related to better physical and mental health. Yet communities with the highest levels of obesity and lowest levels of physical activity have the least safe access to parks. Safe access to parks is a right and a necessity for healthy communities.

Active Design Miami

Active Design Miami is a set of policy and design strategies for creating healthier streets, open spaces, and buildings. Active Design Miami was inspired by New York's Active Design Guidelines, developed almost 10 years ago through a broad collaboration between numerous departments, agencies, and organizations. In 2015, The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) begun the work of developing Active Design Miami as part of a contract with the Florida Department of Health, funded through the Centers for Disease Control. In September 2016, MCAD, in collaboration with numerous community, institutional, and civic partners, completed the first edition of Active Design Miami. A total of sixty-nine (69) strategies cover four  focus areas: Parks & Open Spaces, Development Patterns, Transportation & Mobility, and Buildings. These guidelines are important because they can help identify strategies to address the needs of all ages and abilities in planning environments and opportunities for people to be active and healthy in their communities.
