Design

February 24, 2017

There are two fundamental things that are the most prized asset of the startups: time and budget. This is why we always want to take advantage of resources to the maximum, so the value of each member is key.

To help make the most of it, this week we bring a particular theme. We'll talk about the rise of a unique profile: the Full Stack Designer. This profile can work in various aspects of the project, as this professional can deal with different challenges of a startup.

Whether you're new or a long-time subscriber to the Design Digest, send us an email if you any questions or comments! :)

Cheers,
Phillip and Eugenio

What is a Full-Stack Designer, and Should You be One?

Dustin Cartwright

In the “old” days, it was fairly straightforward. There was very clear separation between the design and development groups, with very few people doing both. Now though, it’s fairly uncommon to find a web designer that doesn’t also do some sort of development or UX work as well. The problem is that now a “web designer” could mean someone who only does design, does design and some code, or may even handle the full design to development process! Enter the full-stack designer.

What is Full-Stack Design?

Will Shandling

It used to be so simple. Back in the day, commercial graphic designers mainly did print ads, brochures and the occasional direct mailer. But that was then. Now, you’re currently reading these words on a glowing rectangle, and the scope of what every designer needs to know has grown faster than a three month old Great Dane puppy. Full-Stack Design, Full Stop!

The Full-Stack Designer …and Why You Need to be One

Corey Lee

As a designer who’s skill set and ambitions bleed outside the box that defines the expected role of a designer, I’ve continuously struggled with concisely conveying what I do, and why I do it. After deciding not to be bound by the expectations of others, I thought hard about what it really was that I was aiming for and why I needed to do it. I realized what I really wanted to become was a Full-Stack Designer.

The Designer is the most valuable team member in a startup. By hiring a good designer you can get this profiles: Designer (of course), Writer, Filmmaker, Salesman, Marketer, Developer, Researcher, Problem Solver. Don't have a Designer on your team yet? What are you waiting for? ;)

The Definition of a Full Stack Designer

Editorial Team - 1stWebDesigner

In the past, there was a clear distinction between a web designer and a web developer. While it is true that there were people who could both design and develop, the number was tiny.

However, times have changed. These days, more and more web designers are equipped with the knowledge and responsibility of a web developer, working both on the design and development.
