The Rice Advancement office presents The Transitional Aged Brain: The Best of Times and the Worst of Times:  Wednesday, March 8 from 6-7pm in the Rice Cafeteria
Parents, please join us for a presentation on teenage brain development by Rice parent and internationally-known expert on child and adolescent behavior, Dr. James Hudziak. Dr. Hudziak is the Director of the Vermont Center for Children, Youth, and Families at Fletcher Allen Health Care and University of Vermont’s College of Medicine. He is also a UVM professor teaching one of the school's most popular classes, "Healthy Brains, Healthy Bodies." His teachings are the organizational basis for UVM's Wellness Environment, new dorms currently under construction on Main Campus promoting fitness, mentoring, nutrition and mindfulness. Dr. Hudziak will speak for 40 minutes and conclude with a 20 minute Q&A session.  Register here.

High School for a Day
4-6th graders are invited to attend Rice's annual High School for a Day (HS4D) Part II on Friday, March 17.  HS4D is a unique opportunity for elementary school students to familiarize themselves with Rice, our faculty and students.  Participants customize their HS4D schedule by choosing from a variety of hands-on activities specially-created to highlight Rice's classes, clubs, and sports.

Marriage Encounter Weekend
A Marriage Encounter weekend is a special time together for you & your spouse, away from the usual distractions of work, kids, etc., in the gorgeous setting of Isle La Motte on Lake Champlain. Couples see how important their marriage is, and the goodness in each other. Every married couple deserves a Marriage Encounter Weekend; it can make a good marriage a great marriage! The upcoming Marriage Encounter weekend is March 17-19, and the deadline to sign up is February 24. Rice Application Deadline for 2017-2018 Academic Year
February 17 is our priority application deadline at Rice.  While admissions are rolling, it is advantageous to at least begin the application process before the February 17 deadline. After this deadline, the application fee will increase from $150 to $250.  Please refer to our website for details. To login to the myRice portal to check the status of your child's application.  

2017 Vermont State Scholastic Chess Championships
Is your child a chess player? Registration is now open for the 30th Annual Vermont State Scholastic Chess Championships!  The tournament will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Berlin Elementary School.  All Vermont students are eligible to compete for State Championships in 9 divisions: each grade Kindergarten through Grade 6, Middle School (Grades 7 & 8) and High School (Grades 9 through 12).  Complete rules, schedule and registration information can be found on the vtchess.info web site at:

Don't Give Up Chocolate for Lent this Year
You can go even deeper. There are new opportunities to dig into the Scriptures as we journey toward Easter together. The Bible and the Virgin Mary - Will be offered from 6 to 7 PM in the SFX School Library on Monday evenings:  3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3, 4/10, and 4/17.  This study will also be offered from 9:45-10:45 AM at the Francis Center (at St. Mark's) on ​Tuesday​ mornings: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, and 4/11. SPORTS NEWS:

7th/8th Grade Girls
The 7/8 Girls played an exciting and determined game last Sunday against CTK. The team worked hard at both ends of the court, resulting in multiple lead changes throughout the game and just missed a few chances late that could have secured the lead and the win. The Maelyn led a balanced scoring attack with seven points, Cassidy dropped in six, Mel drained five, Anna had four, and Caroline and Larissa each netted two. Allison showed quick hands and disciplined defense, knocking away passes and preventing easy baskets in the lane. It was great to see the girls step up and play an inspired game against a tough opponent.

5th Grade Boys
St Francis: 21 vs. St. John Vianney: 31. The scrappy St. Francis 5th Grade Boys’ Basketball team played a tough game against  St. John Vianney on Sunday the 19th at 3:00pm at Essex Middle School.  The team kept the score tight throughout the game but seemed to run out of gas in the 4thquarter only managing 2 points in the final session.  Sam Parris led the team with 8 points and 6 rebounds, Owen Messineo tallied 6 points and 1 rebound, Shane Mobley 2 points and 3 rebounds, Dallas St. Peter 2 points and 2 rebounds, Coleton Merchant 1 point and 4 rebounds, Mason Griffiths 2 points and 1 rebound, Elijah Wood with one rebound, and John Ahonen, Stosh Zuk, and Colton Fay with hustle plays throughout the match.

Before the matchup with St. John Vianney, the 5th grade team mixed with the SFX 6th grade squad and the two groups split up enjoying a fun scrimmage due to St. Mark’s being unable to make the game.  And what a game it was!  A two point decision for the team wearing the home white jerseys.  Nice job guys!

8th Grade Boys
The SFX 8^th grade boys took on a tough Mater Christi A team last Sunday. The teams were evenly matched in a back-and-forth, exciting contest.  Chris Prim hit a buzzer beater at the end of Q1 giving the Golden Angels a 13-11 lead.  The second quarter was full of steals and turnovers, but limited scoring, leading to a still-tight 21-18 game at half.  The third quarter began with rapid pace and full-court press, leading to numerous fouls and turnovers.  Mater Christi played aggressively, going ahead by 1 by the end of the third.  The score was tied at 31 with four minutes to go, and at 33 with three minutes to go.  It was evident this game was going down to the wire.  Mater Christi was able to drive to the paint and gain success that way while SFX struggled doing so.  The refs let the boys play as several fouls by both sides were not called to stop play.  SFX  was down by 1 with 9 seconds left, needing to foul as Mater Christi had the ball.  It took them 6 seconds to get the foul, losing key seconds to allow them a chance to score.  Mater Christ couldn’t capitalize at the foul line, leaving the game a 1 point affair.  After an SFX time-out to strategize, SFX had one last shot to try and win the game.  It was a long ball launched from just past half court that went high off the board.  This day, Mater Christi prevailed in a true nail biter.  For the Golden Angels, Chris Prim lead the pack with 6, JJ Stockbridge had 4, and Zac Roy added 2.
