Give and Save While Empowering Girls in Uganda during
International Women's
Night Out!

Empowering Girls in Uganda, by Volunteer Coordinator, Jane De Byle:

My first trip to Uganda was in 2011. My primary purpose was to distribute reading glasses.  It was an experience I will never forget. We also visited many schools which often serve as orphanages as well. I accompanied Linda, who is a retired Nurse Practitioner, to help with the girls’ seminar where we talked about their menstrual cycles. At the end of the seminar, she pulled out some of the pads our sewing group had made. The girls cried and danced with joy. I was confused, so I asked Linda why they were acting like that and she stated, “The girls do not go to school when they are on their periods.” We gave the pads to the Nun who was in charge of the girls. She said, “These are no good.” When asked why she replied, “We do not have access to knickers.” (underwear ) Later during that trip Linda went to the black market in Kambala to buy knickers. She said she felt very unsafe despite traveling with her husband and four other men, one of whom was Ugandan. We learned it is very difficult to buy underwear there.

I returned from my trip and immediately joined the Sew and Sews at the First Presbyterian Church where the pads that we had taken were made. Through my experience in talking to the women and girls in Uganda, I learned what they needed, so we have redesigned our pads. We got pad ideas from Days for Girls and modified  them to be easier to sew. We got the idea for  the kits from them as well.  We now take over sling packs containing 5 pair of panties, 3 pad holders, 12 pad inserts, 2 Ziploc bags and laundry soap.

I travel with the SEEEME group (Sustainable Education, Economics and Engineering), which is a local organization that makes humanitarian trips to Ugand.  Our sewing group funds the purchase of treadle sewing machines in Uganda for women's groups and schools.  Along with each sewing machine, we give them a start-up sewing kit. With the machines and supplies we provide they can make their own pads and do other projects.

The Sew 'n Sews will be attending International Women’s Night on Friday March 3rd at Global Village Gifts. Since items for sewing the pads are not easily available in Uganda, we are asking for a donation of items for the the start-up kits.

If you wish to donate - and receive a coupon for 20% off your entire purchase (excluding food & beverage) during the event! - please choose from the following list of much needed items:(*excluding food & beverage items)

Velcro (strips)

Thread

Straight pins

Hand sewing needles

Scissors to cut fabric

Tape measure

Pin cushions

Reading glasses 1.5 and 2.5
