Happy International Polar Bear Day!

International Polar Bear Day is an annual event celebrated every February 27th to raise awareness about the conservations status of the polar bear. It was initiated and is organized by Polar Bears International to raise awareness about the impact of global warming and reduced sea ice on polar bear populations. The day encourages people to find ways to reduce their carbon output, such as turning down their thermostat, driving less and installing energy efficient insulation in their homes.
Using less energy produced by carbon-based fuels reduces our carbon emissions and can slow and even stop global warming, in turn saving our sea ice. Polar bears require sea ice for efficient hunting. Without sea ice, polar bears will decline in range and numbers, making them vulnerable to extinction in the future.
Make it a global day of action for polar bears by taking part in the Thermostat Challenge at work and at home. It’s simple, just lower your thermostat today to reduce your carbon emissions and then make every day “polar bear day” by installing a programmable thermostat. Heating and cooling account for roughly half the energy consumption in the home. And then take extra steps to reduce your energy consumption throughout the year.
Make It Social: Share your Thermostat Challenge photos on social media with #PolarBearDay, #TheromostatChallenge, and/or #Hygge. What is hygge? It’s a Danish word that loosely translates as coziness: so, turn down the heat and put on your favorite sweater, snuggle up under or a warm blanket, light candles, or bundle up for a walk in the snow!

Great Canadian Adventurers

It is ironic that I spend most of my life in Manitoba but I have to move away to California to realize that I really needed to see and experience a Polar Bear adventure back in Churchill, Manitoba. And what an experience it was! These giant bears are among earth’s mysterious and fascinating animals and seeing them is akin to my trips to see lions, tigers and elephants. And with climate change happening I was even more compelled to arrange a trip to visit them.
