Learn to Prune Grapes at Philomath High School

Master Gardener Alan Taylor and The Philomath High School Botany Research Garden and Farm To School Program is hosting a local workshop on grape pruning. Come join us to learn about growing and maintaining grapes and take home a few cuttings to start your own grape vines!

We will provide:
- Instruction on grape pruning
- Grapes to practice pruning
- Tools needed for pruning
- Grape cuttings to take home

Introduction to Planning and Record-Keeping for Farm Business Management

In case you missed it at the small farms conference, this workshop will focus on using business plans and records as integral tools for business management, emphasizing the process of setting goals, making projections, monitoring progress and measuring results as vital for decision-making and continuous improvement. Workshop participants will be introduced to the basic components of a business plan with an emphasis on the financial components. We’ll explore how to come up with initial financial projections to get your farm business started. We’ll also look at the key farm financial records that you’ll want to keep along the way and how to use these records in combination with your plans and projections to manage your farm business.

Rogue Farm Corps is looking to fill positions for our on-farm internship and apprenticeship programs. Internships are available in the South Willamette Valley and other location in Oregon and offer experiences with vegetable production, animal husbandry, dairy, and more. Please help us spread the word.
 
FarmsNext is a full season entry-level residential internship program that combines hands-on training and skills-based education in sustainable agriculture.
 
The FarmsNOW apprenticeship program is for those with farming experience, who are seeking mastery in the art and business of sustainable agriculture. Hands-on training, classes, seminars, and guidance on farm business development will help you gain the skills to plan, design, and run integrated farming systems on your own.

Full season hands-on immersive internship opportunities on livestock and mixed livestock/vegetable farms in Oregon for 2017 through Rogue Farm Corps.  Get real-world experience on a sustainable family farm operation while joining a network of beginning farmers through farm tours, classes, and discussion circles.

Forage Workshop
Thursday, February 23, from 2 pm to 7 pm. The location will be Building B, Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall.

Times & presentations are as follows:
Forage and Livestock Resources Roundtable - 2 pm to 4:30 pm
Hay, pasture and silage experts will be available to present information in an informal setting. Workshop participants can ask questions and find resources which can be applicable to their individual forage situations.

Hay Evaluation and Current Livestock Issues - 5 to 7 pm
Paying too much for hay? Livestock still thin after eating? Learn what to look for when buying hay and factors that affect hay nutrition. Learn what makes good hay and how to identify it. Participants are encouraged to bring hay samples. Current Status of Food and Safety Inspection (FSIS) Labeling for Meat Products and The Veterinary Feed Directive

OSU Forage Management Series (Five parts)
Each part consists of an evening classroom presentation at the Oldfield Animal Teaching Facility on the OSU campus, followed by a morning field practical at a local outdoor location.

Class meets Wednesdays (6 – 8:30 pm) and Thursdays (10 – noon). Topics for each month are:
April 19 & 20 – Farm and Forage Assessment
May 24 & 25 – Harvest Management
June 28 & 29 – Irrigation
August 16 and 17 – Fertility
September 20 and 21 – Renovation Techniques

Speakers will be Shelby Filley, David Hannaway, Serkan Ates, Gene Pirelli, and Troy Downing, plus other OSU faculty and local experts.

This series will focus on a “project ranch” that we work on together, including site visits and on-line document sharing and blog. The project ranch will be the Wilson Farm, the OSU sheep facility with sheep and cattle grazing the pastures. You can also work on your own ranch as a side project if desired. The objective of the series is to improve knowledge about managing forage on properties in the Willamette Valley.
