WHY "KONDAK" TRI?
The name derives from the Barwon River, named Kondak Baarwon by John Helder Wedge, surveyor, in 1835. The word is thought to be Aboriginal for great, wide or deep water. ( source Victorian places )

WHAT TO DO ON RACE MORNING

PRE RACE CHECKLIST

Arrive early (Registration opens at 6:30am).

Collect your Race Kit from the registration tent.
- This includes: Kondak T-shirt, Timing band, Number bib & pins, bike & helmet
  stickers, and swim cap.
- Each swim start has its own cap colour. Do not swap with others.
- Every competitor will have their race number written on their right arm when
  they collect their registration kit.

□ Event t-shirts
All women's t-shirts sizes have been increased by one size due to smaller
than usual sizes. Men's are as ordered.

Number bibs
- These are to be worn on the front of your body for the cycle and run legs.
- You can attach the number bib using the pins supplied, alternatively you
could attach it to a race belt (not supplied) which you slip on after the swim.
- The race bibs are to identify you for the race announcer & for spot prizes.
- They are also for marshals to assist you coming in to transition as there are
different bike entry and exit points depending on your category.
- Competitors wearing bathers or tri suits who don't want to pin their race bibs
on may choose not to wear the race bib.
- It is every athletes responsibility to know the course and where to exit and
enter with your bike. This is outlined in the transition maps below.

Timing Band - Securely attach to either ankle.
- Once you put it on do not take it off to change ankles as they will not re-stick.
- The timing bands are disposable & don't need to be returned.
- Teams receive one timing band per team member (3 in total) - they are not
number specific and can be worn by any of the team members.

Attach race number stickers to helmet (Right hand side)
- Bike security number sticker to your handle bars or head stem.
- This is your security pass when entering and exiting the transition area with
your bike. This sticker will match your race bib and number on your arm.

Bike Rack (Transition)
- You will need to show your race number to gain entry.
- Bike racks are allocated per age category not per person.
- Most age categories have multiple racks to choose from.
- Racks will have age category signs & also maps up on notice boards to assist.
- You can choose any spot along the rack according to your age category.
- Do not rack your bike elsewhere as this will affect the flow of traffic.
- Rack your bike in between the tape markings on the racks.
- Bikes should alternate either side of the rack so there is never two bikes
  right beside each other.
- Leave your race equipment on the chain ring side of the bike (towel, helmet,
  shoes, race top, drink).

Bag Compound
The rotunda will be fenced off and managed by volunteers for any bags. You will receive a bag tag with your race bib which you will remove and attach to your bag. Whilst the bag compound is secure we strongly recommend that no valuables are left in this area and you name all your belongings. (We take no responsibility for lost property). Your race number will need to be shown to collect your bag.

Attend the Pre-Race Briefing (8:00am - 8:10am)
This year the pre race briefing will be done from the Presentation stage near the finish line. Allow 10 mins to walk to the start after the briefing

Swim wave starts
- The first swim wave is at 8:30am, each wave is 2 mins apart
- Some age categories have 2 separate waves - the label on your
registration envelope and swim cap colour indicates what wave you are in.
Make sure you know what time you begin!

Swim start requirements
- Before the start of your wave you will be asked, over a megaphone, to pass
through a timing mat on the sand near the shoreline.
- You will then have under 2 minutes to make your way to the swim start which
is in knee to waist deep water about 30m from the shore.

□ Teams competitors (2 or 3 per team)
- This year the team transition is in a new location (refer to maps below)
- All team members will wear a disposable timing band.
- The timing bands are not specific - any of the 3 timing bands can be worn by
  any team member.
- The team members who are not competing at the time will wait in the team
  member changeover section.
- Once you have completed your section you give the next team member a high
five and off they go. You can either remain in the area or leave to spectate.
- Marshals will be in the team compound to assist.

Parking arrangements - Please remember to plan ahead.
There are numerous Parking options available (see map below)

We’ve received a large number of emails from nervous first timers, asking all sorts of questions.
Here is some Q & A’s which may help:

Q. What do I wear in the swim?
A. Comfortable pair of bathers, goggles, race swim cap (provided by us). Wetsuit-optional

Q. Will the swim be in deep water?
A. The start of the swim will be in waist deep water, you may be able to porpoise in the beginning. The rest of the swim will be in water overhead depth until you turn for the shore, when the water depth will obviously get shallower.

Q. I’m worried about the swim, is there lifeguards nearby, can I stop and rest?
A. This swim will be aided with an incoming current making this distance feel shorter than 400m in the pool. Ocean Grove SLSC will be looking after water safety, they will have an IRB (boat) and 8 board paddlers nearby to assist if you. If you need assistance this is indicated by raising your hand. You can stop and rest at any time.

Q. What clothing do I wear on the cycle & run legs?
A.  All competitors must have covered torsos.
Females may wear just their bathers, or a singlet/top if they like. Shorts & socks optional.
Males – singlet/top. Shorts & socks optional.

Q. Where do I place my race number, do I wear it in the swim?
A. You don’t have to wear your race number in the swim.
Your race number will come with safety pins, attach this to the front of your top.

Q. Will we be allocated a specific spot to rack our bikes?
A. You will be allocated a rack to put your bike on according to your age and gender, it will not be named or numbered. Eg. 30 - 39 males will all rack their bikes on the same length of rack. There will be tape marking the racks to ensure bikes are in the right spot and evenly spread.

Q. What do you put beside your bike in transition?
A. Suggestions include: towel, race top/singlet with race number, shoes, helmet, sunglasses, hat. Ensure your gear does not spill out into the through way between bike racks.

Q. Are there any specific Triathlon rules I need to know?
A. Yes, even though this event is a fun event with a large number of first timer’s, rules still apply to ensure fairness and safety. Please click on the links below to read the Triathlon Australia rules and watch the educational clip on drafting in the cycle leg. Also this link to proper helmet fit ( click here )
