2017 Volunteer Projects Announced!

 

The three million acre USFS Superior National Forest contains 2,000 lakes, 400 miles of hiking trails, 27 campgrounds and the most visited, federally designated wilderness area in the country, among many other features. Join the Northwoods Volunteer Connection and help conserve this unique land and its resources. 

This year we are offering 5-day wilderness opportunities as well as single day events (more to be announced). There are and two NEW ways to get involved in public land stewardship with the Visitor Use Monitoring and Adopt-an-Entry-Point programs. We hope to see you in the woods or on the trail this summer!

Multi-Day BWCA Wilderness Projects

Help preserve a rich natural legacy for current and future generations, while gaining a unique wilderness experience with a 5-day trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

6/19 - 6/23: Wilderness Project #1 - Angleworm Hiking Trail Clearing
Hiking trip. Departing from Ely.

7/12 - 7/16: Wilderness Project #2 - Granite River Portage Repair
Canoe trip. Departing from Grand Marais.

8/12 -  8/16: Wilderness Project #3 - Ramshead Lake Portage Clearing
Canoe trip. Departing from Cook.

The Northwoods Volunteer Connection provides most of the gear volunteers need for these projects. There is a $50 per person registration fee for participants.

Wilderness Visitor Use Monitoring

Help maintain the integrity of the wilderness experience by monitoring visitor use in the BWCAW. In an effort to better understand the use that occurs in the Wilderness, visitor use monitoring is conducted annually. This activity helps the Forest Service determine the opportunities for solitude or likelihood of encountering people within the BWCAW. Volunteers will be assigned a travel route and date to conduct monitoring.

Adopt Bass Lake Trail Event

Saturday, June 24th

9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Spend a Saturday on the trail with friends or family during our inaugural clearing event. The Northwoods Volunteer Connection has adopted Bass Lake Trail and will be completing on-going clearing events and other maintenance projects to keep this popular trail in the Ely area in good condition.

Are you interested in volunteer stewardship but unable to commit to a week-long project? Unsure about a multi-day trip in the Wilderness? This is the perfect opportunity for you - get a taste of adventure as a Northwoods volunteer in a single Saturday!

Isabella Invasive Plant Removal

Saturday, July 22nd

9:30 am - 2:00 pm

Help remove an invasive plant, spotted knapweed, from the Isabella area and encourage native pollinators!

Adopt-an-Entry Point

Entry points are the gateways to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Individuals, groups, or businesses can "adopt" these resources and help ensure they remain open for use. These volunteers assist in keeping the entry point areas and access roads clear of vegetation and litter.
