From the Director, Dr. Anne Fenety

Many New Year resolutions hint at renewal, variously defined as a regeneration, or the receipt of fresh life or strength. Renewal in nature is seen as a positive force. For example, each spring, we welcome the renewal of flowers and trees. However, in large, traditional organizations like the academic world, renewal can be slowed by inertia. While inertia gives stability to the university, it may halt the flow of new ideas, new research paradigms, or new teaching methods. In short, inertia may slow down renewal. The noted poet, Hermann Hess said that “Whether you and I and a few others will renew the world someday remains to be seen. But within ourselves we must renew it each day.” So let’s talk about renewal in the School of Physiotherapy...

Faculty Profile

Until recently, Dr. Rebecca Moyer had never been to the east coast. “If someone had told me two-years ago that I would become a resident of Halifax, then I wouldn’t have believed them. But I’m glad that they would be right.” Having lived in Halifax for only a few weeks, Rebecca feels right at home within the city, and in particular, within the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie. “The School has a thirst for progress, provides immense support and has an uncanny sense of family.” Continue reading ...

STUDENTS:

PhD student Sarah Kraeutner, (Supervisor: Shaun Boe) was recognized as the top Killam Predoctoral award winner at the Killam Awards Reception, receiving the Dr. George Cooper Killam Prize. Killam awards are the most prestigious scholarship awarded by the University, recognizing the very best in graduate and postgraduate education. Funding from the Killam scholarship provides support for Sarah as she pursues her doctoral work, which focuses on better understanding how imagined movements can be used to aid in the acquisition of motor skills and how they might be used in rehabilitation to help with recovery of movement after brain injury, such as stroke. Congratulations Sarah on a well-deserved award!

The PT Ball is just around the corner, make sure to mark this very special event in your calendar's for March 25th at the Atlantica Hotel.

FACULTY & STAFF:

Welcome Dr. Rebecca Moyer, our newest faculty member in the School of Physiotherapy. Read more about Dr. Moyer in our Faculty Profile.

Congratulations to Lillian Crump, our new Online Communications and Administrative Assistant. With an extensive background in graphic design, and strong administrative support experience, we are very pleased to have Lil in this role.

Bittersweet farewell to Ronald Renz, who will be retiring from his position as Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education in March. Ron has been a wonderful addition to our School, with his background as a Feldenkrais Practitioner and in Nonviolent Communication. While we are very sad to see Ron go, we are excited for his next adventure as Co-Director of Gampo Abbey, a Shambhala Monastery in Pleasant Bay, Cape Breton.

WITH APPRECIATION:

The School of Physiotherapy is very appreciative of its many alumni supporters, whether they support the School through being Clinical Instructors, Lab Demonstrators, Guest Lecturers, Annual Fund donors, employers of our graduates, or a combination thereof.

This winter we would like to acknowledge two innovative donations from our alumni community:

The Class of 2016, who collectively donated $2500 in honour of their 50th reunion, to support clinical placements in international or remote clinical sites. Our Clinical Education highlights the experiences of our Year 2 students who each received a $500 travel bursary, with additional bursaries available for summer placements.

Justin Whittle and Chris Cluett, Class of 2003 alumni, of Proactive Wellness and Prevention in Newfoundland and Labrador, have created a $500 graduate award called “The Persistence Award” to be to a graduating student who exemplifies focus, determination, motivation and commitment to their program (peer nominated). This award is unique, in that it recognizes valuable personal attributes outside of academic merit.

IN MEMORIAM:

This is not a regular segment of our eNewsletter, however our Physiotherapy community has experienced significant loss in late 2016/early 2017, which we would like to acknowledge with our sincere condolences to family and friends:

Melissa Lank (obituary), an alumnus of the Class of 1996 and Physiotherapist at the Prince County Hospital in PEI, was an active Clinical Instructor who mentored many of our students.
Deb McLane (obituary), an alumnus of the Class of 1966, who recently celebrated their 50th class reunion in October 2016. Deb worked as a neurosurgery physiotherapist with Capital Health for over 35 years.
Dr. Macolm Peat (obituary), a national and international leader in community-based rehabilitation, who collaborated, taught and supervised some of our School’s faculty members and many of their peers.
