Dear Friends and Members,

It is my pleasure to have this opportunity to update you on the numerous ESO activities that are  being carried out by our members.

First, I would like to share with you the fact that  the Metropolitan Hospital in Pireus, Greece has been the first certified  ESO Stroke Unit.  For this, we would like to congratulate Apostolos Safouris, Dr Odysseas Kargiotis,  led by Elefterios Stamboulis for their dedication  that  allowed for this  recognition. This ESO Stroke Unit certification will be valid for 5 years.
We would  like to thank Ulrike Waje-Andreassen Darius Nabavi and Damian Jenkinson for their meticulous  and scrupulous   evaluation that led  to the granting  of  this certification. Seven  other hospitals  have recently  applied for this  recognition  and the final decisions regarding their possible  certification  will be announced shortly. We  strongly encourage our members to apply for  ESO Stroke Unit   certification  in order to better harmonise  stroke treatment standards throughout  Europe. To  find out  more  go  to http://eso-stroke.org/stroke-unit-stroke-centre-certification/

Furthermore, our membership committee chair Thompson Robinson, along with Jennifer Thomsen from our head-office, have reported that the 2018 membership  goal of 5,000. has been surpassed. ESO membership, coming  from  84 countries, as of February 24, 2017, stands at 5,062!

A Memorandum of Understanding between Stroke Alliance For Europe(SAFE)  and ESO has been signed where both parties  agree  to collaborate on supporting  stroke  awareness, patient care, research and long-term sequelae.  Our collaboration with SAFE has been on-going since 2014 when Miquel Gallofre was elected as vice-president of ESO. Since then, we have been cooperating on initiatives including the European Alliance for Endovascular Stroke Treatment  which is  jointly carrying out a survey on endovascular treatment standards, throughout Europe together with ESMINT and  EAN. The results of this survey are scheduled to be presented at ESOC 2017 in Prague.
Furthermore, SAFE and ESO are actively seeking to increase the awareness of politicians on stroke in Brussels through  face-to-face  meetings that drive home the importance of  prioritising  and  adopting  a universal  plan  regarding  stroke  care  for  Europe.

With these activities and much more,  ESO continues  to strive  to be the “Voice of Stroke in Europe”.  We would like to  hear  from you.  Please write to us if you have any  suggestions to make  or if you  would  like to  get  involved  in  ESO  initiatives.

My best,

Valeria Caso
ESO President
ESO Stroke Summer School

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The 21st ESO Stroke Summer School will take place in Larissa, Greece from 11 - 15 September 2017. The application deadline is 31 March 2017.

What is the ESO Stroke Summer School?

For the last 20 years, the Stroke Summer School is a flagship event for the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) and a prestigious educational meeting for stroke trainees throughout Europe. During these two decades, hundreds of young physicians with a major interest in cerebrovascular diseases had the opportunity to attend this high-quality event, acquire cutting-edge knowledge and become interconnected with other stroke physicians around Europe. For all of us in the ESO, it is very rewarding to see that many of the previous Stroke Summer School’s participants have evolved to become leading stroke physicians and researchers.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

Candidates up to and including the age of 45 with fluent English. Candidates should be ESO individual members in good standing.

Report of the 4th ESO ESMINT ESNR Stroke Winter School
Submitted by Dr. Linxin Li, Oxford, UK

The 4th ESO ESMINT ESNR Stroke Winter School was held in Bern, Switzerland from the 31st January to 3rd February 2017. 57 neurologists and neuroradiologists from 18 different countries participated in a broad teaching programme including both expert-led lectures and hands-on tutorials, focusing particularly on interdisciplinary treatment of acute stroke.
During the three-day course, a wide range of topics were covered by lectures delivered by world-leading neurologist, interventional and non-interventional neuroradiologists, and neurosurgeons in the field, ranging from an overview of clinical epidemiology of stroke, stroke prevention, to advanced neuroimaging, different clinical aspects of endovascular treatment and the future direction of acute stroke treatment. There were also sessions discussing complex stroke treatment in difficult circumstances, including pregnancy and stroke and paediatric stroke. Combining clinical questions with evidence-based medicine and day-to-day first-hand experience, the participants found the lectures not only educational, but also inspirational. In addition, the e-voting system used during the whole course provided an immediate feedback between the speakers and the audience.

In addition to lectures, small-group tutorials were organised in the afternoons specifically tailored for neurologists and neuroradiologists respectively. Neurologists had sessions learning about cerebral angiography and were taught how to interpret CT and MRI brain, particularly when facing stroke mimics and chameleons.  They also had the opportunity to do the advanced imaging process themselves. For neuroradiologists, a small group of 4-5 participants were given the opportunity to perform diagnostic angiography and endovascular treatment procedures such as thrombectomy with multiple devices in animal models. Some even had their first thrombectomy done during the winter school! Participants also visited the stroke unit in Bern, followed by teaching sessions on how to organise the stroke network and stroke centre more generally.

Apart from teaching, the participants also had the opportunity to discuss during and after the sessions, and in three course dinners with the faculty. The heated discussion between junior colleagues and specialists, neurologists and neuroradiologists, and between different centres offered a great opportunity to reflect on best to improve and standardise acute stroke treatment in Europe in the near future.

The 5th ESO ESMINT ESNR Stroke Winter School will be held at the end of January 2018 in Bern.

1st Thrombectomy Performed at Clinical Centre of Vojvodina, Serbia

Submitted by Dr. Nemanja Popović, 2016 Stroke Winter School participant

On December the 10th, first thrombectomy has been performed at Clinical Centre of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia (Pic 1.). 62 year old male was admitted 1hr after stroke onset with gaze deviation and left side hemiparesis, NIHSS 8. CTA demonstrated right distal M1 segment occlusion. After intravenous thrombolysis with minimal symptom regression, DSA showed M2 occlusion. Thrombectomy was performed with complete recanalisation of the occluded vessel and complete deficit regression (Pic 2.). Team was led by neurologists Sanela Popović and Lorand Sakalaš, interventional radiologist Dragan Anđelić, radiologist Valerija Munteanu, anesthesiologist Severina Zjalić, and Aleksandar Jovanović, Head of Emergency Neurology.

Having in mind interdisciplinary approach necessary for this relatively new method, few prerequisites had to be fulfilled. First, in 2010. new Emergency Center was opened. Stroke Unit has six beds, and four boxes are used for examinations of neurologic patients. CT scanner is only 15 meters away and PACS system has been implemented and updated during the next few years.  Also, multidisciplinary approach between neurologists, radiologists and anesthesiologists developed and improved. After decision to start performing thrombectomy as a new method of stroke treatment, protocol has been written and adopted. Since Clinic of Radiology already had well trained interventional radiologists and equipped angio suite, further education of young neurologists and radiologists had to be provided.

Neurologists Željko Živanović and Nemanja Popović and radiologists Nikola Boban and Aleksandar Spasić attended Winter Stroke Schools in 2014. and 2016., and Nemanja Popović spent one month at Perugia Stroke Unit in 2016. All of this could not have been done without support from ESO and Serbian Society of Neurologists. In conclusion, joined and well planned efforts in less than optimal material circumstances resulted in successful treatment and adoption of new technique. For provided help and support, we owe special gratitude to prof. Urs Fischer from Bern, and prof. Valeria Caso from Perugia.

Dear ESO member,

We would be grateful for your assistance with ongoing work to improve how we deliver standard care to patients after intracerebral haemorrhage. As part of this work, we are interested in understanding the variation that may exist across Europe in how this patient group is managed with respect to anticoagulant reversal, blood pressure management, neurosurgery and supportive care.

The survey will take no more than 5 minutes to complete and can be accessed via the link below. There is no need to complete this survey again if you have already done so. If you have any comments then please contact Adrian Parry-Jones (adrian.parry-jones@manchester.ac.uk<mailto:adrian.parry-jones@manchester.ac.uk>) directly.
