            President’s Corner

By Libby Jean

It is snowing as I write this from my second floor office. Predictions call for up to six inches by tomorrow night. Yet, my thoughts are on warmer days and events. Very soon, the cleaning and planting of gardens will begin. The resilient spring crocuses, daffodils and tulips will bring color back to our cheeks. And the warmth of the sun will rejuvenate our energies toward a fun and active summer.
Most importantly, the Mid Michigan Pug Club board members will be meeting in March to begin the planning  and preparations for the PUGNIC!

(Bug the Pug, on the right, is not available for adoption.)
This annual event is the biggest fundraiser for MMPC each year.  Even greater, it is a wonderful opportunity for pug lovers to gather, connect and celebrate.
How can you help?  Volunteers are needed and much appreciated.  We can always use some strong, energetic help with setting up or tearing down.  Maybe you would be willing to volunteer to help with registration, silent auction or games.  No matter what, just sharing that day with us is the most important thing you can do.
I can almost smell the burgers and brats sizzling on the grill.  The laughter of a wonderful crowd of kind and generous people.  And the comical chorus of snorting coming from those curly tailed bundles of love called PUGS.
Please mark your calendars now for this exciting event on June 17, 2017.  We hope to see you there!!
FOSTER PUGS NEED A SAFE PLACE TO FALL

Our foster homes are the heart and soul of our rescue! Your home could be that safe place for a pug to rest before moving on to his forever home. Our rescue covers vet bills for our fosters, and all foster families are asked to provide is food and lots of love. If you would like more information about how to become a pug foster family, please contact Susan Powers at psysue@aol.com or (616)204-3536. You would be a blessing to a pug in need ❤

     Penny Finds Her              Forever Home

Mom, do horizontal stripes make me look fat??

We fell in love with pugs when a work friend had a litter of pug puppies to sell.   It was love at first sight, and of course we bought one....Sophie.  We had Sophie for sixteen years before she passed away in early August. She outlived three other rescue friends (2 Sharpei's and a cocker-beagle mix).  When Sophie passed away, she left our thirteen year old Pug Marty alone and us with broken hearts.                                                                            We knew we needed to find Marty a new friend, and we needed a Pug to mend our hearts.  Marty is VERY low energy so we knew we didn't want a young dog or puppy. We searched every Pug Rescue we could find and finally found MMPC and Penny!  We put our application in at the end of August, but this was going to take awhile.

            ODE TO A PUG
Bean Louise is not available for adoption.

When I look in your eyes,
              so big dark and buggy;
I do realize that you are a Puggie!

Your little black ears                                on top of your head
Are so cute to look at.
              Yes, that's what I said.

Your flat, tiny, nose which                            snortles and snores,
Can be heard very loudly through                  even closed doors.

And who could resist those                           tight curly tails.
One pictures them bouncing through                  green hills and dales.

Your sweet disposition is                              part of your charm.
And, I like that you fit in                             the crook of my arm.

So many attributes come to my mind,
          You're just the
best pet that                          a person could find!
Halston is not available for adoption.
Penny & Marty doing what pugs do.

Penny came to the MMPC severely over weight, with a urinary tract infection, and a SEVERE ear infection.  Her foster parents worked on her weight and the UTI cleared up, but her ear infection was very stubborn. After many trips to the vet; it still persisted. The vet contemplated surgery. Thankfully that wasn't necessary.

Penny was cleared to come "home" just before Thanksgiving. She had lost five pounds and was given the all clear for her ear.  As soon as she walked into our house it was as if she fit. Penny and Marty were instant friends. She couldn't wait to lay her head on him and snuggle. She also likes to play nurse with him and licks his eyes and ears. She is SOOOO sweet and loving !

We are so grateful to the MMPC and Penny's foster parents for getting her ready for her forever home. They kept us updated on her progress and brought her to our home. Our hearts are full again....we love her so much  ❤ !!!

Love Those Special Needs Pugs!
Sweet Miss Layla has become what we in the rescue world call a "forever foster”  who, for medical reasons, cannot be placed for adoption. Layla has an enlarged heart and a collapsed trachea, which makes it very difficult for her to breathe.  Her condition will certainly shorten her life, and our veterinarian indicated that she will be a hospice pug.  On our veterinarian’s advice, we keep her as calm as possible, because when she becomes overly excited, her breathing becomes difficult and labored. Cold weather makes her condition more difficult to manage, and she only goes outside to go to
the bathroom and quickly comes back in.  In spite of her difficulties, Layla is a happy, loving little girl who loves to cuddle with her humans and snuggle down into a warm blanket.  She enjoys hanging out with our senior pug girl, Lucy, and was an unexpected surprise for our family.  If you would like to help support Layla’s care, you may do so by making a donation to the MMPC. Please go to midmichiganpugclub.com for PayPal donations, or mail a check to       MMPC,  16574 Braile St.,  Detroit, MI   48219
RUFUS IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.  He is a nine and a half year old, special needs Pug, who is  slowly losing the use of his back end. Rufus is still able to walk, but is pretty wobbly and falls down some. He is incontinent for bowel and bladder. Rufus will eventually need a cart to move around. He is receiving injections for arthritis pain in his joints.  He has been neutered and is up to date on all of his shots.
Rufus will be scheduled for a dental and has a lump on one of his legs that will be removed at the time of his dental.   Rufus is a happy pug who still likes to play with toys and with other dogs when he gets the chance. Most of all he wants to be with his people and is happy lounging in his soft bed as long as the family is near by. He does enjoy lap sitting, too.

Rufus will be looking for a special home with loving people who understand his special needs and will be patient and understanding with his disability.
