OpenMic: Investing in Racial Diversity in Tech

OpenMic summarizes literature on the benefits of racial diversity in tech, highlighting studies by Intel and Dalberg which suggest that a diverse workforce has the potential to generate increases of $300-$370 billion annually in the tech sector. Despite an estimated $1.2 billion investment over the last 5 years by tech companies, underrepresented minorities are much less represented in tech than they are in the U.S. workforce as a whole and their departure rates from companies are, “... 3.5 times the rate of white men.” Suggestions for change include: increasing data transparency, establishing goals and connecting the achievement of them to employee pay, and enlisting the support of allies, especially white men.  

NPRNew Evidence Shows There's Still Bias Against Black Natural Hair

The "Good Hair Study” asked 4,000 participants to take an implicit association test showing black women with both natural and smooth hair. Most – across race and gender lines – had bias based on the texture of black women’s hair with more white women finding natural hair less “beautiful” and “professional.” However, based on other parts of their study, the researchers concluded that the bias is learned, not innate, so it can be unlearned. Younger people were more accepting of natural hair as were white women who had more exposure to black women’s natural hair.

Wall Street Journal: How a Woman CEO Affects Sales and Salaries

An academic study of almost 800 Italian companies, led by Professor Luca Flabbi of the University of North Carolina, examined detailed salary and revenue data for a 15-year period and found that a key measure of productivity, sales per employee, rose 14% when companies moved from a male to a female CEO, provided the company also had a workforce that was at least 20% women. The study also found gender pay equity improved for the women who were the strongest contributors.

Inc.: Facebook to Expand Paid Family and Bereavement Leave, Sandberg Says

Facebook has doubled bereavement leave to 20 days for workers who lose an immediate family member and 10 days for the death of an extended family member. COO Sheryl Sandberg said in a post that it makes the economy and nation stronger when people are allowed to grieve for the loss of loved ones.
