Here's 4 big Nebraska boating requirements that will help keep you and your precious loved ones safe during this upcoming boating season.
1. Required Education - You must be at least 14 years of age to operate a motocraft AND Nebraska law requires any driver born after 12/31/85 to complete the Nebraska Boating Safety Course and possess the certificate of course completion while operating the motor craft. 2. Life jackets - Every vessel (except sailboards) must carry one U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket of suitable size for each person on board. Each vessel (except personal watercraft canoes, kayaks and sailboards) must ALSO carry one U.S. Coast Guard-approved throwable device designed to be thrown to a person in the water and not worn.
3. Safety Equipment - the following equipment is required to be onboard anytime your motorboat is afloat - life jackets/flotation device, oars, bailing bucket, fire extinguisher, whistle or bell, ventilating, and backfire flame arrestor.
4. Lighting - All vessels of every description, in use from sunset to sunrise (at night), must display the following lights as specified. No other lights may be used, except a spotlight for difficult navigation. The white light must be visible for a distance of at least two miles. The red and green lights must be visible for a distance of at least one mile. The green light should be visible from the starboard side and the red from the port side.
