The book tells the story of Ed Iskenderian and his innovations as a hot rodder and businessman throughout our hobby’s golden age and beyond. Written by acclaimed automotive journalist and former Motor Trend Classic editor Matt Stone, the book explores Ed’s roots, complete with rare '30s dry lakes racing photos, the backstory of his whimsical Bungholers car club, and iconic T roadster that he has owned since he was a teenager.
We were pleasantly surprised to see so many snapshots of pre-war hot rodding from Isky’s expansive scrapbook, including everything from Ed Winfield racing at Gilmore Stadium to one of the earliest examples of a Deuce highboy we’ve ever seen, circa 1933.
From the lakes to the drags to NASCAR to Bonneville, Isky cams have been a top choice for hundreds, if not thousands, of record setters during the past seven decades. Along with supplying racers with some of the best equipment, Ed built friendships with the who’s who of motorsports from Mickey Thompson to Vic Edelbrock to Phil Weiand to Don Garlits.
In addition to the vintage pictures, the book is jam-packed with images of original catalogs, decals, diagrams, posters from the cam wars and other key pieces of the Iskenderian legacy. They date back to the late-’40s and give an excellent glimpse into some of Ed’s earliest advertising campaigns.
Not everything in this book is of the historic variety—it also includes a handful of contemporary photos of 95-year-old Ed’s workspaces and Isky’s current manufacturing facilities in Gardena, California. It all makes for an unforgettable guided tour that you won’t want to miss.
