February 8 - MEDRC attended the international workshop “Renewable Energy for Desalination: Innovative Research Solutions for Gaza”, organized by the Islamic University of Gaza in cooperation with partners involved in the implementation of the Horizon 2020-funded MERID project (coordinated by EMUNI). MEDRC presented regional case studies and practical solutions for renewable desalination. Renowned experts and researchers representing other organizations such as UNICEF, OXFAM and the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission; discussed practical and innovative solutions mainly related to the use of renewable energy for desalination in Gaza. After the conclusion of the debate sessions, a training event took place to introduce the EU Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020. READ MORE

Oman to take up reforms in water sector
Oman is set to embark on water sector reforms, including modernization of its water network and bring all three constituent elements — water resources, potable water, and wastewater — under a unified structure. According to the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), the review will help “improve coordination” across the different elements of the water sector which are currently managed by multiple bodies. READ MORE
 
Oman: OPWP seeks consultants for RO 105m Salalah, Sharqiyah water schemes

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the sole procurer of all new power generation and water desalination capacity in the Sultanate, is inviting qualified consultants to bid for its contract to provide supervisory and project management services linked to the development of two new Independent Water Projects (IWPs) planned in the Sharqiyah South and Dhofar Governorates of the Sultanate. READ MORE
 
Oman: Ashkharah, Duqm and Khasab get new water projects
The scenic beach town of Ashkharah in Al Sharqiyah governorate will get a new desalination plant with capacity of 80,000 m3/d (17.6 MIGD).“This project is expected to be developed in two phases of 40,000 m3/d (8.8 MIGD). The first phase is to be completed in 2019 and the final phase to be completed in 2020. Oman: New water projects on the anvil
Though Oman has made impressive progress in water sector yet strong demand growth in potable water supply is a big challenge. The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), member of Nama Group and which is the single Buyer of power and water for all IPP/IWPP projects within the Sultanate of Oman, plans to procure two new Independent Water Projects (IWP), in addition to those that are currently in varying stages of construction and procurement. READ MORE

Prof David Rooney, director of sustainable energy research at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast was speaking at an event on renewable energy and biofuels organized by the Independent Learning Centre at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). Oman: Osmoflo completes turn-key project to provide water to Omani people
Osmoflo has completed a number of Municipal projects in which it has provided fresh, safe water to communities. One of these was in Oman. Completed almost a year ago, the 56,775m3/d water treatment project has the capacity to provide water for up to 250,000 people. READ MORE
 
Oman: 13 in race for key Greenfield water project in Oman
A total of 13 consortiums are vying for a contract to build the first independent water project (IWP) in Musandam Governorate in the north of Oman, according to a report. Top water utilities from Spain, France, Australia, UAE and Qatar besides other individual bidders have submitted the statement of qualifications (SoQ) for the project, reported Oman Observer, citing the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). Palestine: EU & UNICEF inaugurated Gaza's largest seawater desalination plant
On January 19th, 2017 the European Union (EU) and UNICEF officially inaugurated the largest seawater desalination plant built in the Gaza Strip so far. The €10 million plant, funded by the EU, has the capacity of producing 6,000 m3 of potable water daily to provide around 75,000 Palestinians with safe drinking water in the southern Gaza Strip—about 35,000 people in Khan Younis and 40,000 people in Rafah. Jordan: Second phase of water network construction at Zaatari camp starts
The second phase of the construction works for the water and wastewater network at Zaatari Refugee Camp in Mafraq was launched last month, according to a UNICEF statement. Representatives from the Ministry of Water, the German embassy, UNICEF and the Syrian Refugee Affairs Directorate attended the launch ceremony. The first phase of the project resulted in an increase in efficiency and improvement of the hygienic environment for children at the camp, over 80km northeast of Amman. READ MORE

Jordan: Confirms Its Lead Role in Solar Energy Among the Arab Countries With the Falcon Ma’an Plant
The Falcon Ma’an solar plant, one of the largest in the Middle East has just been connected to the Jordanian national grid.  The 23.1 MWp solar plant – executed by the Italian company Enerray, a leading global EPC contractor, and Saudi renewable energy company Desert Technologies – puts Jordan on the map as the leading regional solar powered nation. Israel: Cutting desalination costs ​
The ​harsh, dry ​climate means ​ensuring water ​supplies is a ​top priority, ​and as a result ​Israel gets up ​to ​75 percent of its ​potable water ​from desalination. To put that ​into perspective,​ the entire ​state of Texas ​currently ​produces about ​123 million ​gallons per day ​with desalination,​ or roughly 465,​606 cubic ​meters per day. ​The ​Sorek Desalination Plant  outside ​Tel Aviv, one ​of many in the ​country, alone ​produces about ​624,000 cubic ​meters per day/ ​164 MGD​.​ READ MORE

Egypt: Belarus to start drilling deep water extraction wells in Egypt in 2017
In 2017 Belarus intends to start the project to drill deep water extraction wells in Egypt, BelTA learned from Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Andrei Kovkhuto on 27 December. The Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry and the Housing and Utilities Ministry intend to implement a water supply engineering project in Egypt. There are hopes for increasing the export of geological services in 2017 by drilling and testing deep water extraction wells in Egypt. READ MORE

Saudi Arabia: Singapore's Hyflux to sign desalination deal with Saudi's SWCC
Hyflux is to deliver three seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants to Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) in a deal worth SAR 687 million ($183 million). The company's Saudi subsidiary, Hydrochem Saudi Limited, signed a memorandum of understanding with SWCC to design, build, supply, test, and commission the plants in Duba, Wajh, and Haql on the Red Sea coast. READ MORE

UAE: Solar PV powers desalination plant in Abu Dhabi
Solar PV’s dynamism stems from its ability to take on different forms. An emerging application for the technology is seawater desalination using electricity generated through solar PV. The water desalination plant in Ghantoot, Abu Dhabi is a cluster of five innovative pilot projects that aim to test new technology configurations and bring them to the market. READ MORE

UAE: Renewable Water Desalination - The Next Big Thing
Approximately 50% of the cost of desalination is from energy use. So, one great way to cut costs is by cutting energy use. UAE: GCC and EU experts discuss on the Clean Energy opportunities and challenges in the GCC region
Last 17 January in Abu Dhabi; fruitful discussions took place at the Forum on Clean Energy Opportunities and Challenges in the GCC region, which was co-organised by the UAE Ministry of Energy, the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretariat General, the EU-GCC Clean Energy Network and the DG Energy of the European Commission. The event was organized alongside the WFES series of events, and was a back to back event to the EU Energy Day Workshop organized by the European Commission. READ MORE

UAE: Ras Al Khaimah raps nine desalination stations after extensive testing
Ras Al Khaimah Municipality inspected 160 desalination stations across the emirate during the past seven months, collecting 1,015 samples for lab testing. Nine were found either to be selling impure water or using unsafe bottles. READ MORE

UAE: Yokogawa enters UAE with Sharjah thermal desalination project order
Japanese electrical engineering and Software Company Yokogawa Electric Corporation has secured its first order for a power and desalination plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The company’s subsidiary Yokogawa Middle East & Africa received an order from the Sharjah Electricity & Water Authority (SEWA) to provide control systems for the Layyah Power and Desalination Station. READ MORE

Morocco: to Play Key Role in Africa’s Access to Water and Sanitation
The African Water Association (AAE) conference, entitled “Water and Sanitation in Africa: Challenges and Prospects”, opened in Skhirat on February 13rd, with the participation of more than 200 decision makers from Francophone and Anglophone Africa. Initiated by the Moroccan Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), these meetings, which took place on February 13 to 17, provided an opportunity for African leaders to discuss the challenges facing the African continent. READ MORE

Tunisia: Start of operation of the desalination plant in Tozeur
The new desalination plant entered into the operating phase last February 13, 2017. This plant was built as part of the national program for the improvement of drinking water quality. The production capacity of the station is around 6000 cubic meters and its capacity to reduce the salt level in water is 1.5 grams per liter. A second project will concern about 543 thousand inhabitants of the six governorates of southern Tunisia. The project budget is 175 million Tunisian dinars. READ MORE

Lebanon: Unblocking the cycle of water stress, crises and innovation in drylands
The International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED) is looking at ways to strengthen resilience in crisis-hit dryland regions, focusing initially on environmental challenges in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley and the arid lands of Kenya. In Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, the accommodation of displaced people from Syria and elsewhere has been blamed for making existing environmental challenges worse. READ MORE

UfM: Reinforcing regional cooperation
As a clear signal in support of enhanced regional cooperation and strengthened ties, the UfM Secretariat and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) signed a €6.5 million multi-annual financing agreement to implement and strengthen UfM core activities. The first agreement with a Member country of its kind, the focus will be to work on three key areas for the region: women’s empowerment and gender equality, climate action and energy, as well as water, environment and blue economy. North Africa: Tackling water scarcity
North African countries will face serious challenges in the next decades regarding water scarcity. Anticipating the impact this might have on food production and economic growth by finding technological and non-technological solutions is MADWATER's goal. MADFORWATER, a Horizon 2020 funded project, is therefore developing solutions for the management of water resources in Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt. Eighteen partners distributed over six EU countries, three selected Mediterranean African Countries (MACs), Switzerland and China are now focused on wastewater treatment and efficient reuse in agriculture. MENA: Investing in Water
MENA is the most water-scarce region in the world. Water availability per person per year has declined sharply over the last 50 years and is today a tenth of the average global water availability. In Jordan, water availability declined from 3,600 cubic meters per person/year in 1946 to 128 cubic meters today. READ MORE

Arab region: Training of Trainers (ToT) on Mainstreaming Climate Change in Water Strategies
In Support of the Arab Ministerial Water Council and the countries of the Arab region, the GIZ regional programme ACCWaM, together with the League of Arab States (LAS), identified the need to develop tools and modules for mainstreaming climate change adaption into national water strategies and action plans. UNESCO: Water Information Network System (IHP-WINS)
The Water Information Network System is an open source and open access platform that combines geolocalized data. It was developed by UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme to serve as a global reference in the design and support of operations, management, and decision support functions for sound water resources governance. It is also designed to assist Member States in monitoring and implementing the Sustainable Development Goal to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all" (SDG6). California: Startup creates renewable hydrogen energy out of sunlight and water
California startup HyperSolar and University of Iowa researchers have teamed up to make renewable energy in a way that draws inspiration from plants. Using water and sunlight, they are able to make renewable hydrogen energy. At the end of May, HyperSolar announced a “breakthrough” in efficiency, and the University of Iowa just renewed a year-long research agreement with the startup. READ MORE

UK: Veragon Water Solutions Ltd: is a pioneer in the environmentally friendly “Air To Water” sector, having developed a range of modular and scalable products, which harvest the humidity in the air into clean mineralized drinking water, on a commercial scale. READ MORE

Malta: Debate over closing water cycle
The freshwater demand in Malta is put under high pressure as a result of tourism and agricultural activities, especially in region where groundwater has been overexploited for such purposes. The use of recycled municipal wastewater is therefore seen as a much needed solution to protect and preserve groundwater sources, however wastewater reclamation and reuse is still highly debated on the island. France: Preparations for the 8th World Forum are progressing in Marseille
The International Steering Committee (ISC) and the Thematic Commission of the 8th World Water Forum held a series of meetings in Marseille, France, during the 60th World Water Council Board of Governors Meeting in late November. The occasion provided the opportunity for the third ISC meeting, during which the Forum's plan and budget, the documents presented by the various Commissions, as well as the final thematic framework were discussed. France: Right to water and sanitation
The French Parliament on the verge of adopting a historic bill. Draft Law 685 on the effective implementation of the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation was adopted by the National Assembly on June 14, Was voted on 15 February by the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development. Some 40 associations, including the Fondation Libertés, the Coalition Eau and the Ile-de-France Water Co-ordination, welcomed this progress, which must be confirmed during the plenary session On 22 February 2017. Belgium: OptimEDAR achieves up to 20% savings in the wastewater treatment plant of Wijer
By average, the 50% of energy cost of wastewater treatment plants is spent in the aeration process of the biological reactor. In addition, there are specific regulations which have to be fulfilled. Spanish company Adasa is concerned about WWTP operators’ challenges and has designed OptimEDAR, a low-cost online aeration control system, based on the application of ‘virtual sensing’ techniques. OptimEDAR helps to achieve a reduction cost and enhance the wastewater effluents quality thanks to a higher efficiency of the nutrients removal. READ MORE

Singapore: PUB request s for proposals to build fifth desalination plant
Singapore’s national water agency, put up a Request for Proposal (RFP) earlier in February for the development of Singapore’s fifth desalination plant. To be built on Jurong Island under a Design-Build-Own-Operate (DBOO) arrangement by 2020,the plant will  add  another 137,000  cubic  metres,  or  approximately 30 million  imperial gallons of desalinated water (mgd) a day to Singapore’s water supply, enhancing water supply resilience. Singapore: Keppel to build Singapore's 4th desalination plant in Marina East
Keppel Infrastructure Holdings will design, build, own and operate Singapore's fourth desalination plant, national water agency PUB announced on Thursday (Dec 22). The company was chosen as the preferred bidder after an open tender that attracted 16 bids from seven local and international bidders, PUB said in a statement. READ MORE

Iran: Iran to build two desalination plants to increase oil production
The works will comprise Gachsaran-3, a desalination plant able to support processing of 110,000 barrels a day of crude oil, and Bibi Hakimeh-1, processing 55,000 barrels a day. READ MORE

Iran: Intelligent water metering on its way to reduce Non-Revenue water percentage
With an aim to reduce the Non-revenue Water percentage from 43 to 20, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has drawn an action plan to fix Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) meters to bill the consumers. Two model metering zones will be identified on a pilot basis from next month for procuring and fixing the meters. READ MORE

Biomimetic membrane: Copying nature to purify water in Space
Providing clean drinking water for the astronauts on the International Space Station is a headache for engineers and mission planners. Water is heavy and humans consume many liters each day and sending water to the Space Station space is costly. Collaboration Is Key to Tackling Drinking Water Challenges
A well water safety forum held at AAAS headquarters not only gave experts a chance to brainstorm solutions for their shared challenges. It was also an opportunity for the 17 graduate students who organized the event to learn collaboratively and to serve their communities. “Obviously collaboration is something we really want to encourage within science, because that’s where the most cutting-edge research gets done,” said Andrew George, a Ph.D. candidate in biology at Duke University. Shared risk – key to guiding action on water, food and energy

Water research awards launched by Oman's research council (TRC)
The Research Council (TRC) announced, in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science and the Ministry of Education, the launching of the Research and Innovations Award in Water Science, within the Strategic Programme for Water Research Award. Registration is on ends on January 31, 2017. Applications must be submitted through the website of TRC www.trc.gov.om. The results will be announced on March 22, 2017 within the celebration of World Water Day. READ MORE

The International Desalination Association (IDA) announces that Holly Johnson Churman, P.E., Technology Manager at Water Standard, has been named the recipient of its 2016-17 Fellowship Award. Ms. Churman will receive a monetary award of $10,000 US and will participate in a four-week attachment with PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, host agency for the 2016-17 IDA Fellowship Program.
