EDITORIAL
Hace una semana hemos iniciado el Segundo Quinquemestre de este curso académico, y como es nuestra costumbre, lleno de actividades.
Destaco la participación de Martina Lapo, obteniendo el primer lugar en el concurso de ensayo literario del Colegio Albert Einstein, ya tenemos una futura escritora en SEK Los Valles. Además, un grupo de alumnos de secundaria ya inició su participación en el festival de periodismo deportivo, serán los futuros periodistas en nuestro Colegio. Pero también tenemos aquellos que serán artistas plásticos, quienes la semana anterior visitaron una estampería de Quito, para aprender la técnica del grabado en xilografía.
Nos esperan muchas actividades en la recta final del curso escolar, todas orientadas al aprendizaje en las distintas materias, a desarrollar la tecnología y a fomentar los valores en nuestros estudiantes.

CONCURSO DE ENSAYO LITERARIO
|

|
El 14 de febrero del 2017 participé como representante del Colegio en la XVI edición del Concurso de Ensayo Literario “Anna Frank”. Este concurso cuenta con la participación de más de una docena de colegios de la capital. Mediante la construcción de un ensayo de cinco párrafos, los estudiantes podemos realizar un ejercicio reflexivo sobre temas de actualidad desde la perspectiva de una base literaria.
“Sueño de un Labriego”, del costarriqueño Fernando Durán A., fue el texto con el cual aborde mi tema de desarrollo que fue “La Literatura como Posibilidad de Transformación”. Después de dos horas de enfrentarme a una superficie de papel concluí mi propuesta. Al día siguiente, cuando se emitieron los resultados, tuve un segundo momento de shock que marcará mi vida. ¡Había ganado el Primer Lugar de la Tercera Categoría!
Mi madre siempre había dicho que vive con una escritora, pero no le creí porque pensé que mi “don” era otro. Sin lugar a dudas, pasé una buena parte de mi vida buscando mi don sin saber que lo tenía frente a mí.

FESTIVAL DE PERIODISMO DEPORTIVO
|

Un grupo de estudiantes de secundaria participaremos en el Festival de Periodismo Deportivo de Radio La Red. Este encuentro intercolegial tiene como objetivo brindar a los alumnos la posibilidad de realizar su propio programa deportivo, en base a varios lineamientos propuestos por este medio de comunicación.
La primera capacitación la dirigió D. Alfonso Laso Ayala, periodista reconocido y experto en el relato deportivo, quien habló sobre la importancia de la emocionalidad y la veracidad de lo que se expresa al aire.
Estamos muy entusiasmados por producir un programa en vivo de calidad, que guste a la audiencia y brinde mucha información de nuestro Colegio.

RESCATANDO TÉCNICAS DE GRABADO

El jueves día 16 de febrero, los estudiantes de Tercero de Bachillerato BI visitaron la Estampería Quiteña, ubicada en el Centro Histórico de la Capital. En esta oportunidad, los alumnos realizaron la impresión de los grabados con la técnica de xilografía.
Los estudiantes se encontraron felices de poder disfrutar de este espacio artístico, en el cual los grandes maestros del grabado compartieron sus experiencias.
La asignatura de Artes Visuales abre la posibilidad de experimentar en una variedad de técnicas y materiales potenciando la creatividad de nuestros alumnos.

INTEGRITY

We face choices every single day, and it is to us to do the right thing even if no one is watching. Integrity is not only doing your own homework without copying it from someone else. It is not only doing your test without cheating, it is a value that can be applied to any situation. It means doing what is right no matter the circumstances. Showing integrity means to be true to oneself.
In the February Assembly the Social Studies Department presented a role play in which a teenage girl disobeyed her parents and then she showed honesty by returning a missing wallet. People might think that she did the right thing, but what she did was not completely right, because she had to take the best decision and show integrity in both situations.
Sometimes the choice you make brings serious consequences, but even then, you have to be true to your word and face the responsibility of your decisions.

REAL MADRID FOUNDATION

Implemented in 2014, the Real Madrid Foundation (RMF) selected Hout Bay International School as its base of operations for a start-up community project to use football to positively impact the social world of underprivileged students within the local community.
Currently HBIS has over 50 students from schools in Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg and other parts of Hout Bay attending its RMF training sessions every Monday and Friday afternoon. The RMF provides the structure of the programme and the use of its name, while HBIS funds the entire programme which includes the cost of the coaches, equipment, uniforms and return transport etc.
Due to the incredible demand, and interest from students around Hout Bay, HBIS partnered with Soccer Biz last year to assist in running the programme. We are incredibly proud to offer such an amazing community outreach project and would like to invite some of our own students to join should they have the time and willingness to commit to such an outreach programme.
Besides being taught valuable social skills through the vehicle of Football, it is a wonderful opportunity for our students to interact with other students from all around Hout Bay.

SEK BUDAPEST PARTICIPATES IN GREEN WEEK

Just a few days and we’re off!
Mr. Nicholas, four fellow students and I are all excited about leaving for Costa Rica next Friday for the SEK Green Week 2017. I’ve read every single description which is available online about Costa Rica, and I’ve also bought the National Geographic tour guide to the country. This is the first time that I’ve been given a chance to travel to the Caribbean.
What I know for sure is that this program has been popular among SEK schools. We’re staying with host families, and we’re going to be able to discover the wonders of nature every day. We’re also preparing for an adventure tour in different places such as near a volcano which is still active, in a cave, on a white sandy beach and a rope bridge. We’re also excited about going on a boat tour among crocodiles and rafting in wild water – all this surrounded by one of the most bio-diverse places on earth with exotic flora and fauna! The whole week’s program sounds like a fantastic experience!
Our journey from Budapest will be long; we’ll be leaving from Budapest for San Jose and we’re going to welcome the summer in our winter coats. I think it’ll feel strange to pack shorts, bathing suits, flip-flops, sun-cream and insect repellent in February. I hope that I’ll be able to benefit from what I’ve learnt in my photography course and take awesome pictures about the scenery. Just to be on the safe side, I’ve already set the equipment.
I can’t wait to meet all the other SEK students because it’s going to be fun to get to know them all and hear about their lives, cultures and opinions. I must admit it’s getting more and more difficult to concentrate on my studies as my thoughts are already on the plane to Costa Rica. I’m sure it’ll be an unforgettable experience.

USEK AYUDA A DAMNIFICADOS DEL SUR DE CHILE

Una emotiva jornada se vivió durante la entrega de canastas familiares a los afectados por los incendios en la VI región de nuestro país.
Familias enteras lo perdieron todo. El fuego arrasó sin discriminación con cerros y prados de la localidad de Pumanque, donde representantes y alumnos de USEK fueron como voluntarios a entregar un granito de arena a la gente que, hasta ese momento, no recibía ayuda.
El Coordinador de Asuntos Estudiantiles de la Universidad SEK, Felipe Sandoval Beltrán, manifestó que “la experiencia fue algo que la universidad necesita. Se hizo campaña y estuvimos presente”.
Además agregó que con esto “estamos realizando vida universitaria” algo que los mismos alumnos han pedido.
La comunidad USEK se siente orgullosa de sus alumnos por esta gran iniciativa, recolectando distintos productos en los centros de acopio en las sedes de Santiago y el aporte que realizó la misma Universidad.
Podemos decir ¡MISIÓN CUMPLIDA! Nuestros voluntarios se devolvieron a Santiago con el corazón lleno de felicidad al ver la alegría de las familias ayudadas.
Agradecemos a todos los que participaron en esta campaña de ayuda. A los voluntarios que estuvieron en los centros de acopio, a la Dirección de Asuntos Estudiantiles, a la Institución Internacional SEK por el importante aporte en mercadería para los damnificados, de los centros de estudiantes que fueron los protagonistas de esta gran cruzada solidaria y quién nos recibió y coordinó en la zona afectada, don Emilio Soto, ex concejal de Pumanque.
