Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

March 9, 2017
Have you heard about the dance and drumming routines students have been putting together in their PE classes? They've got some fabulous moves! Ask your child to describe what they've been putting together with yoga balls, laundry baskets and sticks.

Dear Friends and Families,
While the school break was appreciated by many, we are jumping right back into routines and productivity here at school.  During a quick tour about the building today, students were observed, across grades and content levels, diving into challenges, from perfecting a piece of music on the clarinet, to drafting a writing piece in response to a prompt, to discussing the various factors that influence their thinking.  I find that I sometimes need to ask a variety of questions of my own children to hear about their days (i.e., What did you do in PE today? What is something that you're really interested in that you have been working on? What is something that you're finding is really challenging you?) Please take the time to ask our students these questions, however-- they have rich experiences to tell you about.
Thank you to those of you who were able to attend this year's annual school meeting this past Tuesday. With the transition to the unified school district, and one budget and board for all schools in our district, there are certainly changes to some of how we have done business. Please always feel free to ask if you have any questions.
 Respectfully,      Kaiya Korb

Jen Dreimeller joins WES Staff:
Long-term Substitute Guidance Counselor

Many of you are aware that our school counselor, Katie Babic, will soon be welcoming a new child into her family and hence, be away from school for the remainder of the year on maternity leave. We're pleased to announce that Waitsfield resident and parent of two WES students, Jen Dreimeller, will be stepping into Katie's place when she is on leave. Jen will be working slightly fewer hours than Katie, but available weekly to support students and our community.
Jen currently works as the Harwood middle school counselor, part-time. She loves supporting students and families using a family-systems and solution-focused approach.  She is passionate about helping students discover who they are and helping them grow into their full potential. She encourages this by using various activities such as play, creativity, movement, mindfulness and groups. She is thrilled to fill-in at WES this spring and to get to know the awesome students and staff.
When she is not working she enjoys spending time with her two kids, husband and dog. Her hobbies include cooking, crafts, snowboarding, skiing, hiking, biking, paddle-boarding or anything that involves being outdoors.

Mad River Watershed Photo Contest Raffle  Friends of the Mad River announce a Photo Contest with a spin: contest meets raffle! Rather than judging entries, we'll draw for prizes from photo entries. One photo equals one entry.  Whether it's your favorite swim hole on a summer day or the view from your favorite vista on an icy February morning, we want to see and showcase your favorite moments on the river and across the watershed. Submit photos at "Friends of the Mad River" on Facebook.

Mad River Mini Milers  Registration for Mad River Valley Mini Milers youth running program opened online on Monday, Feb. 27th and slots are filled on a first come first serve basis at https://www.runvermont.org/youth/ready-set-run/. The program will begin in the Valley on April 24th (last year we started in SNOW so starting it later this year) and run every Monday for an hour. (or Wednesdaydepending on what the group wants) Session runs 5 weeks and ends May 22nd. It is a volunteer ONLY program, so I would welcome any parents who can help out once in awhile. If your child is in Girls on the Run, this program will not interfere, and I have my own child doing both.
The program is state-wide - brought it to the Valley last year- that allows both girls and boys in grades K-5. Children meet weekly with Mini Milers leaders to get motivated, educated and keep track of their progress. In addition to mileage incentives, t-shirt and medal, participants receive monthly e-letters filled with ideas, citizen challenges and tasty recipes. At the end of the season, I encourage all runners to sign up for the MVP Health Care Kids 1/2 mile, 1 mile or 2 mile run held May, 27th at Waterfront Park in Burlington as a part of the Vermont City Marathon.
The cost per participant in the Mini Miler program is $35.00. Please contact Kim at Kim.Canarecci@vermont.gov for more information.
