Continuing in Faith and Service

While the retirement of our leader of 43 years is rightfully at the forefront of nearly all activities this week, there is always next week…and the week after that. As a community, we are not stopping or even slowing down. We will always have work to do to fulfill our mission to “reflect the light and love of our creator.”

In fact, as we enter the season of Lent this week (Ash Wednesday is March 1), we again enter the cycle of moving deeper into our shared liturgical and spiritual life. We will take part in all of our Lenten and Easter traditions, plus we are creating something new. Our “Voices of the Laity” Wednesday night series was created in response to parishioners’ calls for more contemplative prayer and to preserve and encourage our rich history of breaking open the Word.

Just as our spiritual life together is evolving, we are moving ahead with new ways to serve our world. In our mission statement we pledge to “sustain the Earth.” Over the years, we have done that in everything from the geothermal heat to the storm drains painted by our children. Our “Hear the Cry of the Earth” speaker series was how we delved into what Pope Francis teachings in Laudato Si.

Yet we know that like our spiritual journey, this work is never truly finished. Late last year, the Chesapeake Bay Trust awarded us a $45,000 grant to design storm water run-off improvements to our parish campus. And just last week Parish Council committed to joining a new initiative in which we will work with other congregations and with Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake to preserve the Jones Falls Watershed.
