Bike To Work Day - May 11, 2017

Bike Walk Alameda is excited to announce that Bike to Work Day is happening on May 11, 2017. Mark your calendars for our yearly event celebrating the community and our love of biking!

This event is made possible every year with the generous help of volunteers and we’re looking for biking enthusiasts to join our Bike to Work Day volunteer team! We’re looking for people like you to help us create a day full of community and biking.

We’re looking for volunteers who are interested in any and all tasks that help us create an amazing Bike to Work Day. Here are some ideas of ways you can help:
  • Hang posters for the event around Alameda
  • Volunteer at our annual Bike Home from Work Event
  • Work at one of our five energizer stations to pass out bags and sign people up for memberships
  • Stuff bags for Bike to Work Day
  • Take photos
  • Transport food and refreshments for the event
  • And much more!
Bicyclists are appreciative of volunteers and the work they do to make this day run seamlessly. Volunteers will also get some amazing free stuff like t-shirts and snacks!

If you are interested in volunteering for Bike to Work Day 2017 great, please fill out this short volunteer form here.

Welcome Kristen,
Our Bike to Work Day Coordinator

Kristen Leckie is joining Bike Walk Alameda as this year’s Bike to Work Day Coordinator. As a kid in Southern California, she spent most of her free time jumping off any ledge she could find on her BMX bike, much to the dismay of her parents. Years later, she has put down the kneepads and is focusing more on bike advocacy and mechanics.

Kristen has lived in Alameda since August 2016 and currently works as the Assistant Manager for Streets of San Francisco Bike Tours in the city. She's been commuting by bike throughout the East Bay and San Francisco for the past 5 years since moving north to attend UC Berkeley. In her spare time she runs community workshops on zine making and stamp carving.

Caltrans Releases Draft of 'Toward an Active California State Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan'

Caltrans has released for public review the draft State Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, which lays out the policies and actions Caltrans and its partner agencies should take to achieve the department’s ambitious statewide goals to double walking and triple bicycling trips by 2020.

“Active transportation is at the nexus of many of our state’s goals, from public health and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to fostering economic development and a sustainable multimodal transportation system,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “In this plan we are identifying the strategies and actions we can take to create better opportunities for bicycling and walking to thrive across California.”

The draft plan, entitled “Toward an Active California, State Bicycle + Pedestrian Plan,” describes four objectives—safety, mobility, preservation and social equity—with corresponding strategies to bring the plan to reality. The Plan’s intent is to complement local and regional efforts already underway to create and implement their own active transportation networks. The Plan also highlights best practices from places around the world where active networks are increasingly popular.

Caltrans encourages stakeholders and the general public to review the Plan and provide feedback on the document. Stakeholder feedback is critical to ensure that the policies developed through this Plan reflect the diverse needs of all communities throughout the State.

Feedback can be provided during February meetings and webinars that will be held on-line and around the state. In addition, the public may review the plan and submit feedback electronically via a simple online comment tool. The comment period will close on March 10.

The final plan is anticipated to be completed in April of 2017. For more details about the meetings, webinars and comment tool please visit www.cabikepedplan.org
