Director’s Corner

It was great to see so many of you at Covenant’s annual Shell-raiser last weekend,  a fun time was had by all and a record amount of money was raised to help supplement our Covenant playscape programs.  Thanks everyone for your generosity!  A big thanks need to go out to Lucy Barnett, Lauren Busey and Jane McPhillips, our fundraising chairs, for soliciting and organizing all the fantastic donations and putting together a great event – your many hours of work were much appreciated by us all!  Thanks also to Mike Hoyland, owner of Prairie Moon, for the great space and food.  Lauren Busey put together the super cute video of our children for the night – thank you so much!  And, to everyone else who volunteered at the auction, donated items, attended the auction and contributed to classroom totes, thank you, thank you, thank you for creating such a terrific community event!

Around this time of year, many parents begin thinking about their child transitioning on to Kindergarten. What are kindergarten teachers expecting? What kinds of things can I be doing at home to help them be ready? How do I help support my child during the lunch transition? For those of you having gone through this transition to elementary school and for those of you quickly approaching it, you know the list of questions and uncertainties can become very long indeed! Kim and I will be hosting a Kindergarten Transition parent coffee on Thursday, March 23 at 9:30 to specifically address some of your concerns, alleviate some anxiety and help support all of you getting ready to embark on this next phase of your child’s life.  We invite anyone interested to join us for coffee, snacks and good conversation!  Everyone is invited -- we would also love to have a few parents who have just made this transition with an older child, hopefully representing many of the neighborhood schools, both public and private.

Parent-teacher conferences will be coming up Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13.  Note that classes will not be in session these days.  While teachers are always available for questions or concerns, this is a great opportunity to discuss with your child’s teachers all the great achievements that have been made in the last four months and potential goals for the future.  Childcare will be offered in the playroom for any children that parents want to drop off.  Jackie Dennis, Kim and myself will be helping to keep children entertained and busy.
Hope everyone has a good couple of weeks -- enjoy a restful Spring Break!

Thanks,
Tina Vanderwarker

DONATE NOW

We would like to thank everyone who came out to share and support in Covenant's "Shell"-Raiser!  It was a splendid and successful event that helped to further build our community.  With over 70 guests, we raised around $15,000!  Make sure you stay tuned for next month's newsletter for further details on the event totals raised.

We also raised $1,140 from the beautiful and natural photos Linda Goad provided of the Covenant children.  We are continually reminded of how wonderful our Covenant community is and how lucky our children are to be surrounded by such supportive and invested families and teachers.  Thank you for all the ways you contribute to our school!

Through the generosity of small businesses, we are raising funds that support our wonderful programs, provide new equipment for classrooms, and provide critical financial aid assistance for families in need.  We would like to sincerely thank our fundraising sponsors for this year, who are @Properties, Kids First Pediatric Partners, First Bank & Trust, North Shore Dentistry for Children, The Center for Speech and Language, Bernard Dentzer Plumbing, Backlot Coffee, Harty Realty Group, and Kunnel Dentistry.

Turtle Two's
The Turtle Two's had a great February!  We talked about and played with color and color mixing.  It was so much fun swirling food coloring in shaving cream. Then it was on to Valentine’s Day!  Beautiful valentines were made by all, for their moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas!  We made the valentines with colored paper and sparkles, doilies and stickers. We continued with the color theme in a colored valentine game.  Colors were mixed while we painted with water colors.  The pictures are really lovely!  We ended the month making delicious fruit smoothies, yum!

We have been loving the nice weather lately!  We all hope it doesn’t get too cold in March!

While going outside was hard in the beginning of the month it has been wonderful lately!  We LOVE being outdoors in the warm.  We all hope it doesn’t get too cold in March!

Turtle Stars
February has been full of fun for the Turtle Stars.  Topics ranged from Chinese New Year to fairy tales.  We also learned about opposites and shapes.  Many thanks to Akari, Zoe's mom, for sharing some interesting facts about Chinese culture with us.  Also, thank you to Shaheen, Faiz's mom, Jane, Lily's mom and Alicia, Tess' mom for coming in to take story dictation from the children.  During the last week of February we started our author series beginning with Todd Parr.

Turtle Champs
February in the Turtle Champs included units  about animals in winter,  talking about feelings, (and making valentines)  and exploring our five senses. Jazz pianist Dan Murphy (Everleigh’s dad) played for us as we explored our sense of hearing.  He played a piece called “Moonlight in Vermont”, some improv leading into the Daniel Striped Tiger theme and then  the Twinkle theme played in different styles. Here are a few responses when I asked the children about the music we heard: “It made me happy.” “I liked it.” “I liked how he played music from different TV shows” “the music sounded hilarious” “beautiful”. As  we explored our sense of touch children enjoyed using play dough, exploring pink goop (glue and liquid starch)  followed by “oobleck” (corn starch and water) in the media table.  Making and eating popcorn for snack was a fun and tasty way to bring all five senses together!
