Harlaxton Lions Headed to the Cup!
Congratulations to the Harlaxton Lions for winning their first round of the Lincolnshire Basketball Association Championship cup against the Lincoln Lightnings (132-120) on Wednesday, February 22. The Lions continue to the semi-finals against Cranwell Hawks in hopes to win the Handicap Cup!
Super Bowl Party
The Spring 2017 Harlaxton students came together to support their favorite team and enjoy entertaining commercials for the LI Super Bowl. Aired at 11:30 p.m. in England, the students watched the Super Bowl in their pajamas while surrounded by Super Bowl snacks provided by the Harlaxton College Student Development Office. Congratulations, New England Patriots!
University of Evansville Peace Bell Casting
Dr. Douglas Reed, professor of music and the university organist at the University of Evansville, recently donated funds to purchase a 241Ž4” diameter Peace Bell from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, England to serve as a visual and aural symbol of the University's strong connection with England, as well as the harmony and goodwill found on UE's campus. Harlaxton students, faculty and staff were present for the Peace Bell casting on Friday, February 24. The bell will call UE its home following the casting, to be rung at important ceremonial events on campus, such as the traditional procession of entering Freshmen from Neu Chapel, at Founders Day, Commencement week, funerals and/or memorial services.

Student Sari Baum is Runner-Up in Norton Writer's Prize
Sari Baum, current University of Evansville and Harlaxton College Spring 2017 student, was recently awarded runner-up in the esteemed Norton Writer's Prize for her piece titled "Bánat is Hungarian for Grief." This is the second year in a row that a University of Evansville students has landed in the top three for the prize, one of the most competitive contests for undergraduate writing.
British Studies Professor Published in Online Journal
Dr. Amber Pouliot, a PhD graduate from the University of Leeds, England, was recently published in The Journal of Victorian Culture Online. An essay co-authored with University of Evansville's Dr. Kristina Hochwender, the published piece looks at literary tourism, reflective learning, and the digital humanities at Harlaxton. Part one and part two of the essay can be found in the online journal.
Visiting Faculty Gold Room Lecture
Spring 2017 visiting faculty member Dr. Nadia Novotorova, a marketing professor from Baker University, recently presented her research on consumer preferences and genetically modified (GM) food labeling as part of Harlaxton College's Gold Room Lecture Series. Her research examined consumer attitudes and preferences towards GM foods in many countries and regions.
Institute of Historical Research Presentation
Current British Studies professor Dr. David Green recently presented his work titled 'Chivalry and Nobility in the Works of John Gower' at the Institute of Historical Research in London. Other recent works by Dr. Green include The Hundred Years War: A People’s History (Yale University Press, 2014; pbk edn 2015), and co-editing of a new interdisciplinary collection discussing The Plantagenet Empire, 1259-1453 (Shaun Tyas, 2016).

Long Weekend: Scotland
Students also had the option to travel with the school to Scotland for the long weekend. Spending one free day in Edinburgh, students had the option to walk the famous Royal Mile, visit the Scottish Parliament and sip tea at the Elephant House Cafe (the birthplace of Harry Potter), among many more local attractions. With two planned day trips, the school took students to the Scottish Highlands to cruise the Loch Ness and to St. Andrews, home of golf and Scotland's oldest university.
Long Weekend: Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland
Thirty students enjoyed their first long weekend of the semester by traveling to Ireland with the school for four days of craic (Gaelic for "fun"). The home of Trinity College and the Guinness headquarters, the students stayed in the capitol of Dublin, taking day trips through the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Destinations included the beautiful Cliffs of Moher, the Giant's Causeway, Belfast and the daring rope bridge of Carrack-A-Rede.
North Wales
The beautiful landscape of North Wales is enough to attract any visitor. Students venture to the western part of Great Britain to explore the caves Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Snowdonia National Park, Caernarfon Castle, the site of the investiture of the Prince of Wales and the town of Chester, home of the largest uncovered Roman amphitheatre in Britain.
Bath and Stonehenge
Known for its outstanding Georgian architecture, students traveled with the school to Bath to explore the Roman ruins, the Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey nestled around the city built on a natural hot spring. Students also took a day trip to Stonehenge, one of the most iconic sites in Britain.

The Manor
Manor Archives Receives Photos from Gregory Gregory Descendant
A set of beautiful images have been forwarded to the Manor Archives by Rear Admiral Michael Gregory, OBE, Lord-Lieutenant for Dunbartonshire. Michael Gregory is a descendent of Francis Gregory, brother of George Gregory (bapt. 1638, d. 1688). Francis and George were sons of John Gregory (d. 1694) and Elizabeth Alton (1613-75), whose marriage is commemorated in the Great Hall stained glass window. George Gregory married Susanna Lister (d. 1713), starting the line of people who would inherit Harlaxton Manor, ending with Gregory Gregory. The images can be seen here.
Harlaxton Love Stories
Harlaxton not only brings together students for a semester filled with adventure, but it’s also known to bring together couples destined for love. Over the past 45 years, young men and women have started their lives together on the grounds of the 19th century country home. So this Valentine’s Day Harlaxton College celebrated some of the love stories that started and blossomed during their time at the Manor. The Community
Visiting Faculty Participates in Rotary Swimarathon
Dr. Erika Deike, assistant professor of kinesiology at Texas Lutheran University and a Spring 2017 visiting faculty member, represented Harlaxton College at the local Rotary Swimarathon, an event dedicated to raising funds for polio treatment across the world. Dr. Deike swam 106 lengths of the pool in 55 minutes. Congratulations, Erika!
