A couple of key items from the weekly media column of SI's Deitsch, starting with news that ESPN is prepping for "significant cost cutting over the next four months on its talent side." The total has been reported as $100M by other outlets & it looks to be connected to slipping financial results by the Worldwide Leader. Deitsch says many recognizable names could be part of the move & some early buyouts are also a possibility. On another front, Deitsch reports college FB reporter Sam Ponder is expected to take over the Sunday NFL Countdown role vacated by the transitioning Chris Berman. (link)
NCAA MBB Committee chair & Michigan State AD Hollis rallies back on comments last week by Cincinnati HC Cronin on how & why teams are seeded in the Tourney, "It's a non-factor. There are so many things we're looking at in the (committee) room. I assure you ticket sales are not one of them." (link); NCAA SVP for Basketball Gavitt has also responded to Cronin's claims, "Mick's assertion that this was a fact is not true. When it happened in the past, it was for separating conference opponents, not ticket sales." Gavitt also pointed to the fact that most Tourney tix are sold long before there's knowledge of where teams will end up. (link)
Florida boss Stricklin pinpoints December as the jumping-off date for the new FB facility in Gainesville. "We look to select a construction manager for the football project by the middle of March and then get all of the user groups together with our staff to begin putting details on paper. We hope to break ground on the project in December with a completion date targeted for 2019." As for the upgrades to Baseball & Softball facilities, work on those two will begin after the 2018 campaigns with enhancements complete by the 2019 home slates. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd points to Wichita State's MBB Missouri Valley Conference Tournament crown yesterday as a sign the Shockers may have outgrown the league. One source when asked if it was the last time WSU will play as a member of the Valley, "Good question. I don't know." WSU HC Marshall's response, "That's above my pay grade. Ask my President." Context from Dodd: "The Shockers are in a league they are starting to carry on their back. The question is, are they getting sore? The last time the Valley had more than two teams in was 2006. The Shockers have accounted for six of the league’s last 10 NCAA entries. Sunday’s clinching of the auto-bid, then, was the worst possible outcome for the venerable Valley. The reason this tournament is so attractive is also its greatest curse." (link)
The Seattle Times investigates Washington for "fraudulently fudging their numbers to make it look like they are closer to Title IX compliance." Dozens of women were listed as members of the Huskies 2013 Rowing team, at least eight of whom have denied even trying out for the squad. AD Cohen: "I remember hearing that our participation numbers were absolutely spot on. The fact that you are calling women, and they are saying that (they weren’t on the team), I can’t tell you how disturbed I am right now." Assoc. AD for Marketing & Communications Henderson in an email response to the Times: "After thoroughly reviewing documents from the years you have inquired about, our Compliance office has found that no individuals were intentionally added … without meeting minimum participation criteria and being documented by athletic department personnel." More details. (link)
HC Notes: Missouri AD Sterk will hire a new MBB HC as three-year boss Anderson will exit. Sterk will lean on Parker Executive Search throughout the process. (link); North Texas AD Baker will also peg a new MBB HC as five-year HC Benford is out. Eastman & Beaudine will be alongside. (link, link); The News-Gazette's Wurth looks at the search firm partner options for Illinois if AD Whitman decides to make a MBB change. Parker has an institution-wide deal in place, but it's not exclusive. Former AD Thomas did use Parker to help hire current embattled HC Groce for a fee of $90K. Current boss Whitman did not use a firm in the process that led to new FB HC Smith. Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Sport Administration Kowalczyk says confidentiality is the most important trait of a search firm. (link); Wichita State MBB HC Marshall says he could retire with the Shockers when asked about the Missouri opening. (link); UConn AD Benedict says injuries to his Huskies MBB squad this year are a legit reason for its competitive results. (link); Penn State MBB HC Chambers will return next season. (link); Colorado College Men's Hockey HC Haviland will also be back for 2017-18. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Would improved podcast options on a long-haul flight keep you better entertained? Skift's Nagy points to the entertainment choice as one way airlines can help you endure the 10-plus hour flights across the globe. In-flight entertainment is one angle many airlines push as differentiators, but Nagy wonders what really matters to travelers. A couple of additional interesting choices could be more destination-specific programming & "slow TV" which takes a viewer through a detailed process of creation, as opposed to just the latest fast-paced action flick. (link)

Duquesne is reportedly ready to pump some cash into a renovation of the AJ Palumbo Center to help Dukes hoops enhance its profile & results. $40M is the ballpark figure to address internal & external needs for the facility. A modernized front porch look, new suite & VIP seating options, improvements to strength & conditioning, sports med, meeting & training rooms are also on the docket. A new standalone practice home may also be in the mix. AD Harper: "We are in the early stages of exploring facility options as part of our Athletics strategic plan. We have yet to determine details of scope and will continue to stick with our process until any plans are final." (link)
Michigan State MBB HC Izzo believes the Big Ten has a bit of a branding problem. When asked if his Spartans deserve to be in the Big Dance after a last-second loss to Maryland, "I really don’t care and I say that about as honestly as I can. I’ve heard nothing about our schedule that we’ve played. We’ve played three No. 1 teams and if I go into that I’m looking to plead. We’re 10-8 and …I blame all of you guys. I’ll blame everyone in this room. We haven’t done a good job promoting the Big Ten. Virginia loses a game and that’s because everyone is good. [Bill] Walton is out there [in the Pac-12] and champions that conference. Nobody talks about our conference. That’s our fault. That’s your fault. That’s my fault." Link includes video of presser. (link)
More notes from the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, this time on a panel that included Notre Dame AD Swarbrick, Big East Commish Ackerman, NCAA SVP Gavitt & Learfield COO Jenkins on "The Business of College Sports." Swarbrick, on potential future issues for the industry, "...the danger to the enterprise is if the lack of integration with the university goes away. It’s not about amateurism. Rather, it is about education." Gavitt commented that maybe the NCAA might need to hire some analytics experts. Swarbrick also noted the value of connecting the university's Sports Analytics Club to various Fighting Irish sport programs. (link)
Baylor Title IX Coordinator Tucker Q&As with BU's university newspaper. On changes to the Sexual & Gender-Based Harassment & Interpersonal Violence Policy, "Some of the changes I would say is we really streamlined the process more – it is still very much an equitable process where both parties have the opportunity for notification and participation, but we are really hoping that this new format is going to streamline the timeliness of the process. In the old process, we had two levels of appeal that went all the way to the president of the university. That is almost unheard of in this field because that is not recommended. All of the challenges even just with schedules for the president of a university to need to fill that role, that is something Judge Starr had wanted and we definitely removed that in this current process. So when we receive a report, it could be face-to-face or when someone calls in or emails or files a report – however we receive a report, we are going to reach out to the student or faculty or staff member who first made it to gather more information and provide resources and options and just talk to them about what their rights are, and that’s our first goal." More. (link)
Yahoo's Forde inks on 10 items to monitor as March Madness is upon us (well, does "March Madness" technically only apply to the NCAA Tourney or the overall "madness" of March hoops?). Forde advocates for as few "mediocre" high-major at-large candidates as possible, points to Jacksonville State MBB HC Harper as the "king" of winning conference tourneys with underdog squads, says "don't hold your breath" on a HC change at Georgetown, knows how to draw clicks with mentions of Kentucky & Duke, a bit more. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz continues his fine work on updates around HC bonuses as conference championships are an everyday thing right now. Maryland WBB boss Frese is up to almost $43K so far this year, FGCU MBB HC Dooley gets $5K for winning the A-SUN tourney crown, $50K for South Carolina WBB HC Staley for the SEC Tourney, $54K for Wichita State MBB HC Marshall from winning the MVC Tourney yesterday, like Dooley, Winthrop HC Kelsey adds $5K for winning the Big South. More. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
In light of several off-court issues with his team, Kansas MBB HC Self responded to a reporter asking if he is running a "loose ship." Self: "That’s not true at all, but that may be how people perceived it, but I think it’s perceived that way because that’s the way some media has reported it. We’re not in a position to talk about a lot of that stuff like we’d like to. ... But what have we done? What have we done that’s bad? The kid kicked a car. That was handled. … I know that we’ve been irresponsible in some ways, a couple of times irresponsible that we could have handled situations better and that kind of stuff. And I’m not denying any of that or running from any of that. But just because I don’t talk about it or our players don’t talk about it doesn’t presume anything other than the fact that we can’t talk about it." USA Today's Schroeder wonders if the "temperature" around the situation would have been hotter if the issues had happened to Louisville's Pitino or Kentucky's Calipari. (link)
Our latest Athletic Director in Residence for Athletic Director U. came from Penn AD Calhoun as she responded to a handful of reader questions. Calhoun thoroughly reviews how she's taken learnings from her time as AD at Loyola Chicago to improve her leadership role as AD with the Quakers, "I have consciously tried to modify two aspects of my leadership style in my second AD position. The first is the level of collaboration, information sharing and outreach with which I approach the job. The second is endeavoring to model that it is impossible to move a large organization forward without taking calculated risks, meaning that accepting and owning failure is part of the job. I have tried to model this for my coaches and staff, talking very openly about failures along the way, not just successes." Calhoun also touches on how her staff engages with the academic community at Penn, monthly HC-only meetings she has with all HCs in her 33-team portfolio, how fundraising is different/the same at an Ivy versus a big state school & more. (link)
New Mexico is trying to correct a $1.5M budget deficit despite FB and MBB tix sales falling short of expectations. Deputy AD for External Operations Hutchins: "I will say that we’re not the only department experiencing the budget situation. It’s true, the economy’s struggling. People aren’t renewing tickets (or) purchasing tickets. That’s why we’re evaluating everything we do and how we do it." The Lobos created an 11-member committee in November to "brainstorm ways to cut costs" and are taking anonymous money-saving suggestions online. Other methods of getting back in the black include sending a survey to fans to better understand the dip in sales, reallocating duties from open positions instead of filling the job slots, and requesting $500K more in student fee revenue, plus more. Texas is pushing to endow all scholarships for its Men's Swimming & Diving programs & Longhorn Foundation Asst. Director of Development Calip, a former UT Swim/Dive letterwinner herself, talks through the effort. "Our team is driving the scholarship campaign towards the $13M goal. We also recruited a team of Ambassadors who represent all living eras of Texas Swimming & Diving. This group of 8 letterwinners (1950s – present) are passionate advocates for swimming and diving, and positive role models of the university. […] We currently have $1.8M raised in established endowments, and our goal is to raise the remaining $11.2M over the next 5-7 years. In order to do this, it has to be a team effort. There will be some generous donors that commit to leadership gifts ($100k and above), but the bulk of the participation will be at lower levels ($99k and less)." (link)
Around Higher Ed: UTSA Prez Romo, who was on leave during a review of his behavior, decides to resign. "I have been made aware that the manner in which I embraced women made them uncomfortable and was inappropriate. I understand and respect Chancellor (William) McRaven's concerns about my behavior and I deeply apologize for any conduct that offended anyone." (link); Arizona's two Prez finalists will be back in front of the hiring committee today, but there are some questions on if Texas Medical Center CEO Robbins would accept a job that is likely to pay in the $700K range when he took home $1.2M in 2014. (link); Wright State is likely to name a new Prez today with Missouri S&T (DII) Chancellor Schrader as the favorite. (link); Alabama State "disbands" a search for a new Prez because of financial constraints. Interim Prez Wilson will continue to lead the university. (link); Oakland's process to hire a new Prez continues as the university received 60 applications by the deadline late last month. Academic Search is the consultant. (link)
Also Noticed: Check out Eastern Kentucky's new Baseball stadium that opened on Saturday from above in this drove video. (link); Iowa Director of Sports Nutrition uses hands-on cooking demonstrations to show student-athletes how to live healthier lifestyles when it's up to them to cook a meal. "If you give them all these foods, but they don’t know what to do with it, then it doesn’t do any good." (link); The NBA's Knicks decided not to play any music during the first half of its game against the Warriors yesterday & the reviews from players & coaches were not favorable. 1.Question Presented by Turnkey Search
North Texas Athletic Director, Wren Baker, is likely already knee-deep in a search for a new MBB HC & in this 1.Q throwback recounted how he prepared for his own interview with the Mean Green, while also leading the Missouri department as the Interim AD. Baker walks through some of his research process, how he got on-site 48 hours in advance to "spend time with my own thoughts," as well as his mental & emotional state when he walked in the room. I also asked what practices advancing administrators can implement to be ready for their first AD interview session & how his leadership style has changed since first becoming an AD in 2006 at Rogers State (DII)Listen by clicking the link. - link (19:03)
