The Story behind Killings – IFJ’s in-depth Report on Media Workers Killed in 2016
IFJ's 26th report on journalists and media professionals killed in the course of their work in 2016 lists details of 93 media professionals killed in work-related incidents last year, a decrease compared to the 2015 figure of 112 killings. Asia-Pacific Safety workshop in Indonesia
IFJ and AJI (Indonesia) hosted a two-day safety workshop in Bali, Indonesia in December 2016. The workshop brought together journalists from Eastern Indonesia to discuss the challenges they face in reporting, and provided them with practical safety skills. Asia-Pacific #BringThemHere
MEAA (Australia) and the IFJ have launched a global campaign calling for the resettlement of three Iranian asylum seekers in Australia. The trio, journalist Behrouz Boochani, performer Mehdi Savari, and cartoonist Eaten Fish, have been at the Manus Island Processing Centre, on behalf of the Australian Government for several years. Africa - Ivory Coast: six journalists arrested
Six journalists have been arrested and detained on 12 February for allegedly publishing information about a contract between the government and special forces unit. IFJ denounces "baseless" arrests.

Africa - The Gambia: three radio stations closed
Taranga FM, Hill Top FM, and Afri Radio were closed down on 1st and 2nd December 2016 by the National Intelligence Agency without explanation. The move is part of a renewed crackdown on independent media in The Gambia that has led to a series of arrests among the press corps.

Arab World and Middle East- Sudan signs Declaration on Media Freedom in the Arab World
Sudan is the fourth Arab country to sign the Declaration after Palestine, Tunisia and Jordan. "We are confident that adopting the Declaration will help in opening a new chapter in relations between the state and the media sector in Sudan" said IFJ.
