State Government Administration Rankings

The U.S. News and World Report recently published its 2017 rankings of state government administrations, ranking states across the board in terms of their fiscal stability, budget transparency, government digitalization, and state integrity. In order to determine the effectiveness of government administration within the states, US News looked at a number of factors. Most importantly was the financial health of the state, including their credit ratings, pension fund liability, and ability to balance budgets. States were also measured by their use of digital technology to inform decisions and management, how the government interfaced with the general public, and by the systems in place to stop corruption. Indiana took home the #1 spot, followed by Virginia at #2, Utah at #3, North Carolina took home 4th place, and Wisconsin rounded it out as the 5th best state for government. New Jersey was considered to be the worst state for government, placing at #50, with Nevada at #49, Kansas at #48, Illinois at #47, and Louisiana at #46.

The states were also individually ranked according to the four aforementioned categories: Fiscal Stability, Budget Transparency, Government Digitalization, and State Integrity. North Dakota took home the top spot for fiscal stability, with Illinois ranking at the bottom. Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Oregon ranked first for budget transparency, with California coming in last. Virginia, Utah, Ohio, Missouri, and Michigan all tied for first in the government digitization rankings, with Kansas taking the #50 spot. Alaska was the top ranked state for state integrity, with Michigan and Wyoming as the worst states in that subcategory.
