Let's Talk Niagara Falls: A New Way to Engage with the City

The City is excited to announce the development and launch of a new online engagement site, Let’s Talk Niagara Falls letstalk.niagarafalls.ca 

The new site allows for the community to contribute ideas and feedback on important City matters! We want to empower you to be more active in shaping your community and future!

The site is full of exciting new announcements and programs happening in the City, including:

March Break is Coming

March Break in the City

With March Break just around the corner (the week of March 13), check out just a few of the exciting activities and events happening in the City!

Make! March Break at the Library
It’s almost time for Make! March Break, and this year the library is full of programs geared to turn kids into ‘Makers’. Makers are creators, imaginators, dreamers, designers, tinkerers, and inventors.

Making involves things high tech, low tech, and everything in between. It’s using your imagination to make something. Anything. And to have fun while doing it.Visit the Niagara Falls Library website for event details.


Public Skating 
Public Skates will be offered during March Break at the Gale Centre on:

  • Wednesday March 15, 2017, 1:30pm - 3:30 pm
  • Thursday March 16, 2017, 6:00pm - 8:00 pm
  • Sunday March 19, 2017, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Public Skates will be offered during March Break at the Chippawa Arena on:
  • Saturday, March 18, 2017, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm 

March Break at the Museum
Come to the Museum this March Break to discover the science and history of SNOW! Join Mad Science @ 11am & 1pm for two different shows exploring the coldest snow around and the magic of chemical reactions!

Afterwards take a journey through the museum, make a winter-themed craft and complete a scavenger hunt, then finish the day off with a movie at 3pm. 

Mad Science is with us March 14-17 and the museum is open 10am until 5pm. Visit niagarafallsmuseums.ca for more information.


Niagara Parks Activities 
The Niagara Parks Commission is offering a lineup of special events and activities for residents and guests this March Break. Visit niagaraparks.com for event details. 

Heartland Forest Adventure Camp
Explore nature this March Break at Heartland Forest. Learn outdoor skills, marksmanship and bush craft.  Enjoy games, team building and campfires with new friends. Visit heartlandforest.org for more information.

We are pleased to announce the City of Niagara Falls won an Honourable Mention in the 2017 Niagara Community Design Awards program for the Victoria Centre Streetscape Revitalization Phase 1, Niagara Falls, ON. under the Public Realm Improvement category! Congratulations to everyone involved!

Love My Neighbourhood: Nominations Now Open!

Love My Neighbourhood is a new initiative to help build a more vibrant, connected Niagara Falls. It is an opportunity for neighbours to come together to celebrate what's special about their neighbourhood.

City staff will organize celebrations at three selected neighbourhood parks with the assistance of neighbourhood volunteers.

To nominate your neighbourhood and local park to be the site of a celebration, complete the Love My Neighbourhood form. Simply tell us what you love about your neighbourhood and why it should be selected for a celebration. Then collect signatures from ten of your neighbours who will help with set up, hosting and clean up the date of your event and who will help spread the word about the event in your neighbourhood.

Battle Ground Hotel Museum

Live History @ Battle Ground Hotel Museum 

Come join the young maid, Mary as she takes you on a tour of the historic Battle Ground Hotel Museum. Using Homer’s The Odyssey as the cipher, engage in a unique experience, as the audience assists Mary in solving a long-hidden mystery, leading to a treasure.

This show is a journey back to a time when the tavern was alive with the past. The audience will experience much about love, loss and honor while being guided through by the one set of eyes that has seen all.

The show will be running on April 1st, at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm and on April 2nd at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. Tickets are $10 per person, must be purchased in advance by calling 905-358-5082 or in person at the Niagara Falls History Museum. View more information.

Habitat for Humanity Women Build

To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, 2017, Habitat Niagara announced a Women Build in Niagara.  Habitat for Humanity is actively recruiting 350 women to build two homes in Niagara Falls. 

The 2017 build consists of teams of 6 women that will be building a semi-detached home for two families in Niagara Falls from August to December, with the two homes being finished in time for Christmas. 

No experience in construction is necessary. There are skilled crew leaders who teach you everything you need to know.  For more information or to get involved click here

Species at Risk in Niagara: Input Needed!

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is looking for your input on the proposed Recovery Strategy for the Round-leaved Greenbrier. This threatened wood-climbing vine may exist in your area and you can help protect it.
 
ECCC  is seeking any information you may have about the species and its needs, as well as threats to the species or its habitat. ECCC is also seeking your views on the conservation and protection measures proposed in the recovery strategy.
 
You are invited to comment on the proposed Recovery Strategy for this species during the 60-day consultation period now underway. View the document and provide your comments online.

Exhibition @ the Museum: Snow

Snow, the first exhibition of its kind in Canada, is currently running at the Niagara Falls History Museum until April 15, 2017. The exhibition portrays the amazing love-hate relationship that the inhabitants of this great land have had with snow since the arrival of the First Peoples in North America.

Snow gives visitors a historical and cultural perspective on this element of nature as a source of adaptation, passion, ingenuity and creativity.  View more information.

Bridge Closure:
Stanley Avenue (Somerville)


The Stanley Avenue (Somerville) Bridge is closed, The bridge is not safe to travel due to a recent accident that damaged the side railing.

The bridge will undergo a previously scheduled rehabilitation starting in early April which includes waterproofing, paving and new parapet walls with railings. The bridge is anticipated to be reopened by mid-July 2017, upon completion of the rehabilitation works.

The City is pleased to announce the completion of the Oakes Park Grandstand Improvement Project and invites the public to attend the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 3:30 pm at Oakes Park, 5700 Morrison Street.

Earth Hour is a global effort to encouraging individuals, businesses and governments around the world to create awareness about caring for our environment.  

Annually, Earth Hour sees the world’s most iconic landmarks, such as Niagara Falls go dark for one designated hour.  

Starting at 8:30 p.m. on March 25, we ask you to consider participating this year by turning off your lights at your residents and place of business. Let’s show the world that Niagara Falls is an earth friendly City! The lights on the Falls will be turned off for Earth Hour as well.

An Inter-municipal Transit Working Group led by the Mayors and CAOs from St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls with support from the Regional Chair and Niagara Region CAO have been working in cooperation to find a sustainable model for inter-municipal transit service in Niagara.

The City is asking residents to please be cooperative, and to refrain from pushing snow or leaves from their property into the streets or catch basins.
