On Tuesday, February 28th, the BID hosted its 14th Annual Membership Meeting at Hill Center. The Annual Membership Meeting is held to elect new board members, re-elect current members to serve an additional three-year term and discuss the BID's accomplishments from the previous year. Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet catered by Well Dunn Catering.
Mayor Muriel Bowser was the keynote speaker and offered praise to the Capitol Hill BID and the partnership that BIDs have with the city. Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen was also in attendance and echoed the Mayor's sentiments and expressed his gratitude to our men and women in blue. We would like to thank both of them for taking the time out of their busy schedules to join us for the meeting.
New to the meeting this year was the addition of a Banner Design Silent Auction, where entries from the BID's Banner Contest were auctioned off to the public, including the four winning designs. These original pieces were created by artists in the Capitol Hill Art League. The proceeds from the auction were split between the artists and the BID's Ready, Willing & Working program. Thank you to everyone who placed a bid; the auction raised over $1,000 for Ready, Willing & Working! Thank you for supporting our local artists and RWW.
The meeting was well-attended by board members, business and property owners, Capitol Hill residents and our men and women in blue. The BID premiered its latest video in honor of our upcoming 5-Year BID Renewal. The video, which you can view below or at this link, celebrates the successes of the last 14 years of service for the BID, and also highlights some of our amazing board members and local businesses. Breaking gardening news: Frager’s Garden Center is open at a new location! The store moved to its new spot next to the hardware store at 1317 E St. SE.
The old location on Pennsylvania closed down last week to make room for new development on the block. Once the new Frager’s hardware is built at its new site on the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE, the garden center will have a permanent location. The construction on that Perseus Realty project is slated to finish in 2019.
That site will include about 8,500 square feet for the store and additional space for the outdoor center.
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon takes place on Saturday, March 11th. About 24,000 runners are expected to take the streets of DC for the 6th annual marathon, half marathon and 5K events.
Click here for a list and map of road closures that will take place in Capitol Hill. Most road closures and detours will be in effect between the hours of 6:30 am and 3:00 pm. The race begins at 7:00 am, and streets will reopen on a rolling basis as soon as the last participant has passed and all course support materials have been removed. Streets along the earlier miles of the route will open earlier than roads along the end of the route.
Please review the road closure grid, freeway ramp closure grid and course map for more information. Residents and businesses located near the race course are urged to plan ahead and to be aware of road closure schedules and alternate access routes.
MuralsDC is a project funded by the DC Department of Public Works, in cooperation with the DC Commission on the Arts and the Humanities, and is designed to provide permanent graffiti abatement to those properties that have experienced or are at risk of this type of vandalism. Since its pilot in 2007, MuralsDC has painted more than 50 murals in every ward of the city.
MuralsDC works with seasoned local, national and international artists to create original works of art on buildings at no cost to the owner. It saves money from the cost of cleaning any future graffiti vandalism, adds a personalized look to the property and studies have shown that murals can also boost a property’s value.
