The Celebration Begins!

This week, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts and members of the Nebraska Legislature conducted the official kickoff to Nebraska’s 150th anniversary celebration.

Agriculture has played a significant role in the history of our state.  While not everyone in Nebraska has agricultural roots, it is estimated that one in four jobs and a quarter of the economic activity in Nebraska is related to agriculture.

In the months ahead there are several special events and activities planned that will celebrate the sesquicentennial and the rich history of Nebraska agriculture.  One such activity is the annual announcement of the Pioneer and Heritage Farm Family Awards. In June, the AKSARBEN Foundation, in partnership with the Nebraska Farm Bureau and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers will honor farm families who have consecutively held ownership of land in the same family for at least 150 years (Heritage) and 100 years (Pioneer), respectively.

You can learn more about the programs here.

Quick Fact

Since 1956 when the Pioneer Farm Award program began, nearly 9,000 farm families from all of Nebraska’s 93 counties have been honored.
