“So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.” They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.” Acts 5:38-40

Sometimes we will not escape the cruelty, jealousy, and judgement of others. Even if it is against wisdom, emotions run hotter than reason. Though this story is tragic at its base, it is a classic case of miscommunication. 

While the Sadducees were filled with jealousy, the voice of reason spoke out for the Council to slow down in their judgment and consider the spiritual nature of the work of the disciples. He was able to convince them that all former groups that rose to prominence in past days had failed. Therefore, unless God was backing this group it would fail too. But if it succeeded, they would be fighting God Himself.

So, they looked on agreement. They agreed they would stay away from these men. It says they took his advice. And then... They called the apostles in and flogged them, and told them to stop speaking about Jesus. Which part did they miss?

Here is the point. We and others have a hard time connecting to our reason when we are emotionally charged. It is not that we don't understand and "get it," it is just that our emotions cancel out the communication. When we are emotionally charged, we are really unable to communicate. 

Next time you are pressed emotionally, it is imperative and prudent to slow down, get your heart right before both God and man and then listen. Otherwise you may run into the same mistake these people made.
