Making Sense of Data -  NHS services across the country continue to be challenged with measuring and improving the quality of their services, and as part of that process, they need to capture data. This, as Karen Middleton, CEO of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists states in her video message at TOMs CONNECT (available to view from here), should be an inherent part of clinical practice.  However, it's not just about collecting the data, with tools such as TOMs or GAS, that data needs to be translated into key meaningful information so that you can start to analyse your services and look at, for example, changes that have been instigated which have lead to improvements.

With that in mind, we are pleased to let you know that plans are now underway for a follow up to the TOMs CONNECT conference, for later this year, which will have as it's theme 'Making Sense of Data'. Further details of this one day event will be released in due course, but in the meantime, please do contact us at info@communitytherapy.org.uk with any specific topics/issues that you would like covered in the programme.

TOMs CONNECT - join a growing online network of TOMs users.
As the number of services implementing the Therapy Outcome Measure continues to grow steadily, year on year, this has lead to an increasing network of experienced users, who may wish to share their experiences and learning, to help others who are perhaps at an earlier stage of implementation. If you are one of those users, or you are just about to start using the TOM but have questions you would like to ask, we urge you to join the TOMs CONNECT online forum, which is hosted on NHS Networks. There have already been some questions concerning the use of the TOM. If you can help and wish to respond to a post or if you have your own query, plus first register with NHS Networks first, if you're not already and then join TOMs CONNECT.

Clinical News - special feature on vocational rehabilitation

Translating Vocational Rehabilitation research into practice.
Research undertaken at the University of Nottingham, in traumatic brain injury and stroke provides useful insights into employers' perspectives when supporting employee's return to work. and what needs there are that should be considered. Two of these include:
  • Concern about what the impact of diagnosis, which include the effect the person might have on team dynamics?
  • Communication - employers have concerns in terms of how they interact with an employee who returning, and in ensuring that the employee or whether an HR manager or occupational therapist should handle this.
To read more about what the research uncovered and what should be put in place to support employees's return to work and how to generate more effective outcomes from VR intervention, click here

Key outcomes to measure in vocational rehabilitation - the what and how?
If you are planning to gather outcomes to support your vocational rehabilitation service, then one of the first steps that you need to consider is identifying the use(s) for the date in advance of starting the process. Prof Kate Radford, who spoke at the CTN, Crossing the Work/Health Divide conference, gave two good examples:
  • Ask, who is the data being measured for?
  • Who will be influenced by the outcomes that are measured?
Kate then want on to provide examples of 'Intended use' of the data, such as to demonstrate VR impact on peoples lives, and then outlined useful outcomes to measure, which you can read about from here.

Mental health at work - top tips.
It is important that employers not only recognise mental health conditions are common, but that they acknowledge this fact through having appropriate support in place. This is the view of Chris Morgan from Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), who spoke at the CTN's 'Crossing the work/health divide' conference. Chris developed severe depression after being made redundant from his role as managing director of an engineering firm. He subsequently became one of the founding members of MHFA in England. Measuring the Value of Rehabilitation - Experience with the TOMs, NAIDEX Tues 28th March, NEC
Rehabilitation services continue to come under pressure from commissioners to demonstrate value. There are many client groups receiving a range of interventions untested by RCTs, and unlikely to be, given their heterogeneity. Thus the best evidence has to be based on collecting outcome data. Come and learn more about the TOM with Prof Pam Enderby. For full details of Prof Enderby's talk and to book please click here.
