"High level" AAC officials are reportedly discussing an expansion which would include Wichita State, Virginia Commonwealth and Dayton as affiliate members (non-FB participants) to boost the league's BB strength. Blaudschun of TMG College Sports clarifies: "It has gone from an idea to a discussion at the upper levels, but far from a serious plan, but it continues to be a prime topic of discussion at conference meetings. ... The American Athletic Conference is looking for a way to upgrade its rankings in basketball with an expansion blueprint focused primarily on Wichita State, but also including other higher profile basketball schools such as Dayton and Virginia Commonwealth." Speculation about WSU's future in the MVC has been ongoing since last year's announcement that consultants would examine the feasibility of adding sports, most notably FB, and while there are no immediate plans to add FB, AD Boatright says any move WSU makes would include all sports. The AAC has 11 BB schools and 12 FB schools (Navy is FB-only), and has therefore often been mentioned as potential landing spot for WSU. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner reports on the four finalists at Sacramento State that have previously been noted here: St. Mary's AD Orr, Louisiana Monroe boss Wickstrom, Cal Executive Director of University Partnerships & former Deputy AD Fulp & Oregon State Deputy AD for Capital Projects & Internal Operations Massari. Wilner calls it "a quality pool," thinks Massari would be an excellent candidate at San Jose State, too ("if they make an outside hire"), points to Fulp's master's degree from Sac State & to Orr's connections to the city. In closing: "I’m not going to claim any insight into which candidate might be the frontrunner. But this much is evident from the Hotline’s corner of the galaxy: Sacramento State … Sac State! … has four good candidates." (link)
Live from Tucson: New Arizona AD Heeke during his intro press conference, "It’s about relationships, it’s about having an opportunity to sit down and share what we’re trying to do. Not just that we’re trying to build a building, but what that building’s about, how that impacts lives, how we’re integral to the overall university’s success. There’s meaningful things going on. You bring those people in and you hope they’ll jump on board and help us. That’s what it’s about. […] It was a surprise to me when Greg moved on. I’ve always looked at this place as a special place. When Greg did move on, it grabbed my attention, there’s no doubt about that. This job should grab anyone’s attention. This is a major, national-caliber athletic program with tremendous potential. There are so many new things that have positioned this place to be very, very successful. […] I’ll admit: I’m not as talented as Greg on Twitter, but we want to engage people at every level, all the time." (link); Here's the full presser. (link)
Live from Knoxville: New Tennessee AD Currie on stage in Thompson-Boling Arena, "I know a lot of folks around here, but there's a lot of folks I don't know or I knew just a little bit a long time ago. There's a lot of new folks and new buildings and incredible growth in Knoxville. My first thing I've got to do is — the Lord gave me two ears and two eyes and one mouth for a reason — I've got to get around and listen and see and learn and reconnect with folks. I can't wait to start doing that. […] Part of the way that we worked hard and I worked hard to re-earn trust with our constituents (while at Kansas State) is being very transparent and being very accessible. We'll do some things here over the next little bit from the athletics perspective to ensure that the Tennessee faithful and the whole Tennessee family feel like they have a good opportunity to connect and share their passion and feelings." More. (link); Another full presser. (link)
Let's Search: Kansas State Prez Myers has already put together his search committee to help tab a new AD for the Wildcats. The group will be led by K-State Alumni Association Prez/CEO Button Renz & includes a cross-section of other university, community, corporate & student-athlete leaders. "Later in the Spring" is noted as the timeline for the committee to offer recommendations to Myers. (link); UT Martin is actually moving forward in its search for a new AD as Chancellor Carver has assembled a team to help with the process that's being chaired by Assoc. VC for Alumni Relations & Annual Giving Deal. Two athletic department reps, two professors, two additional university admins, two student-athletes, a student body leader & a trio of business executives make up the panel. Straight to the point: "A new director is expected to being work on July 1." (link)
Purdue boss Bobinski in the news again, this time for a Q&A with the Big Ten Network. Of note: "Email is not my thing. It is a good tool but you can get impersonal. I prefer to talk." Points to former Notre Dame AD Corrigan & late Xavier/Wake Forest MBB HC Prosser as major positive influences in his professional career. Expects new FB HC Brohm's team to display a new lever of intensity & energy, has no expectations of a win total ("that is a fool's game") & absolutely believes the Boilermakers can win big on the gridiron with all the right financial & support measures in place. (link)
Former Baylor FB HC Briles: "Despite the insistence of certain people, I can remain silent no longer." Briles issues a one-page letter to the Baylor community emphatically denying he had any part in a cover-up concerning the ongoing sexual assault investigation and calling for increased transparency among university leadership. "There is an onslaught of information coming out in the press that is inaccurate, misleading, and unfair to Baylor, its amazing students, its strong faculty, the administration and its athletic programs. ... Let me be clear. I did not cover up sexual violence. Anyone well-versed in my work as a coach knows that I strove to promote excellence, but never at the sacrifice or safety for anyone." More. (link)
Northwestern and the NCAA have filed separate motions seeking the dismissal of a class action lawsuit filed by former Wildcats MBB student-athlete Vassar that seeks to end the NCAA's transfer policy which requires players to sit out one year. Vassar claims the university and MBB HC Collins tried to intimidate him, falsified records and offered a "cash payment" for Vassar to relinquish his scholarship. From the suit: "Thus, Northwestern's Deputy General Counsel, Priva Harjani, informally inquired into Johnnie's openness to considering a cash payment equivalent to the remaining value of his athletics scholarship. However, [Vassar] rejected such a notion out of concern that such a payment would violate NCAA rules, end his ability to play NCAA basketball, and result in the loss of other valuable attributes of his athletics scholarship, such as access to academic support services for athletes." Attorneys for Northwestern refer to these as "alleged communications" and argue that the scholarship was not in effect at the time Vassar claims it was breached. More details. (link)
Since ending its two-year relationship with Leigh Steinberg in 2003-04, Hawaii has handled all of its marketing/multimedia work in-house, but the university announces it is now seeking a new national partner. AD Matlin did not indicate which companies with whom UH is in discussions, but the Honolulu Star Advertiser speculates that Learfield and IMG College are at the top of the list. Matlin: "Obviously, one of the big metrics is financial and (who) will put us in a better position financially. The benefit of looking at a company that has a national reach is that we don't get a lot of national and regional dollars, so it will help our program." Matlin adds that the university hopes to make a decision in the next month and "get up and running for 2017-18." UH currently brings in approximately $5M per year in cash and trade via its local corporate partner program. (link)
Cash: Georgia has $77M in reserves, including $32M "set aside for 'general support' of athletics." AD McGarity: "It’s a good practice to have at least six months of operating expenses in case the unforeseen happens, that we don’t know about. That’s the financial strength that our athletic board mandated, long before I arrived. So it’s a philosophy that’s been in place for decades. Thank the lord." (link); The results are in from the first year of a partnership between USF and the Aspire: $847K in new ticket revenue; $126K in donation dollars attached to tix; increased new FB season tix and flex plans sold by 67% and 1141%, respectively; FB group tix revenue up 82%, more. Senior Assoc. AD for External Goodrich: "While the sales numbers have been incredible, it’s the level of professionalism, the genuine care for our brand, and Aspire’s desire to improve the experience for our student-athletes and fans alike that have made the greatest impression on me." TMG Sports' Blaudschun with more on the wire, this time on the Boston College AD search, "The chatter of Father Leahy’s retirement continues to be heard at The Heights, with the latest rumors being that Father Leahy will make a trip to Ireland in June and announce his retirement.  That date also coincides with the end of the term of John Fish, the [Chairman] of the BC Board of Trustees. It would also be the end of the school year and allow a new President and a new athletic director to have a few months to settle into their new roles. The contract of outgoing BC athletic director Brad Bates also expires in June, so the timing of all these moves would seem to fit." The rest is behind a paywall. (link)
Cincinnati MBB HC Cronin sounds off on the state of the industry as March is here, "The NCAA Tournament committee and everything is so financially driven that no matter what is said on that Sunday, they’re trying to sell tickets. Nobody will admit that because it’s all about the student-athlete apparently. […] If it wasn’t a business we’d be able to have a bus trip in the conference we play in. That goes for the women’s soccer team [and men’s soccer team] … we don’t have a bus trip. Don’t tell me it’s not all about money … Anybody who thinks this isn’t a business is wrong, living in a fantasy land." (link)
The San Diego Union-Tribune's Zeigler claims that reading the subtext holds the clues to parsing San Diego State's position on the proposed Qualcomm Stadium site renovation: they don't like it. The plan put forth by FS Investors, and supported by Mayor Faulconer, calls for a residential-commercial center including a mid-sized stadium to serve as home to an MLS team, 4,800 residential apartments and a multiplex cinema, among other amenities as noted last week. The plan does not call for an expandable FB stadium and land for campus expansion, both of which sit atop SDSU's wish list, according to Zeigler. SDSU AD Wicker: "We have one shot to do this and we have to get it right. ... The initiative, as it's written today, is problematic for me." FS Investors say the 30K-seat stadium is expandable to 40K, but Wicker says the crowded area makes expansion intractable, as SDSU would be on the hook for things such as environmental impact reports and traffic and parking mitigation which could total as much as $100M. All of which may be moot without the "blessing" of the MLS, which has an oft-stated desire for franchises to play in stadiums with capacities of around 20K. Wicker: "Let's make sure people understand what the initiative really is and the community as a whole is getting what it really needs. This is the last major piece of property in the city of San Diego." (link)
Moves: Longtime successful Austin Peay MBB HC Loos will retire after leading the Govs for the last 27 years. (link); Clemson AD Radakovich is making a Volleyball HC change after just two years with former boss Hernesman. (link); Wichita State MBB HC Marshall didn't technically win the the Missouri Valley Coach of the Year vote (lost out to Illinois State boss Muller in a 102-96 count), but he'll get his $25K bonus tied to the accomplishment anyway, per AD Boatright. (link); Turner Sports promotes EVP & GM Hong to a newly created role of COO. Hong is responsible for programming across the Turner Sports portfolio, including NCAA Tourney keys TNT, TBS & truTV. (link)
With financial problems plaguing the university due to cutbacks in state financing and a dwindling enrollment that saw just 86 freshman enroll this past fall, student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators at Chicago State talk about their recent experiences at the school. A women's soccer student-athlete notes how budget issues caused the team to worry about funding for meals while traveling, but new Women's Volleyball AC Manos said his experience in his first year at the university was very positive. "I think there's been a lot of talk swirling around Chicago State, but I think when you get here and you see what's going on day-to-day, I don't think it's as hectic as people make it seem in the media." (link)
Digs: On the heels of setting an all-time MBB attendance mark, Dayton AD Sullivan says plans to renovate UD Arena are "getting closer [...] We’re still studying all kind of different options. If you think about a 50-year-old building and all the things that have to occur, it’s just been a very deliberate process, but when we’re ready we’ll be excited to share what we think the vision is." (link); Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium is ready to play host to 55K fans for the inaugural match of new MLS side, the Atlanta United. (link); Rhode Island's Baseball accommodations will have gone through three upgrades before the Rams host a home game. The work includes new netting, stone work, some turfed areas & larger bleachers. Baylor WBB HC Mulkey with more reflection on her previous comments in connection to the developments in Waco, "I’m sorry for the choice of words. The timing wasn’t good. Poor analogy, maybe, as well. Those of you who know me know I’m an emotional person. I coach with emotion. I played with emotion. And it was an emotional moment. I guess you’d say it got the best of me because I really do love this place. You know, awful things happened here, guys. We failed victims here. But I’m encouraged every day because I see what is taking place to fix it. And I just think we’ve responded the way we can, aggressively, financially. We’ve admitted our mistakes. My heart goes out to victims. How could it not? I’m a woman. I have a daughter. I’m responsible for how many in that locker room. In fact, I’m angry that we failed those women. But I’m also encouraged because I also see that we’re trying to do better." Link includes video of an emotional Mulkey. (link)
Interesting piece explaining how Gonzaga AD Roth was the driving force behind the WCC moving its MBB and WBB conference tournaments to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in 2009. The move paid immediate dividends, as tournament attendance the first year was 31,380, a 54% increase over the best previous figure. Although there were discussions about moving to a bigger venue, conference officials are committed to playing in the 7,500-seat facility through 2018. Roth: "There was discussion about going to a bigger building (before the Orleans contract was extended). But I continue to be a fan of the idea that having a tough ticket is a good thing. I think it hurts leagues when you turn on the TV for these tournaments and you see half-empty buildings, even for championship games." (link)
The Chicago Tribune goes in-depth, embedding with B1G officials leading up to and following two MBB conference games. The Trib's Greenstein offers a summary: "By the time officials take the floor, they are hours into their workday, having iced, stretched and studied each team. ... Some work nearly 100 nights from November to March -- and they razz each other about their heavy schedules. They can make upward of $3,000 per game but have to pay for their flights, hotels and rental cars. They hunger for an invitation to work the NCAA tournament. They miss about 4.2 calls over 40 minutes." For more perspective, official Steratore, who also doubles as an NFL referee: "I single-parented for the last 17 years, ran a business and did both sports. My children used to get on an air mattress and lie in the back of a (Dodge) Durango and I'd go to New York City, ref a game and they'd sleep on the air mattress. And I'd carry them in at 5 in the morning (back in Pittsburgh), put them in the shower and get them to school. The sacrifices are immense." Wow. More. (link)
Let's Get Digital: The CAA will debut new 3D courtside signage at next week's MBB Tourney in North Charleston. Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment connected with Danish firm Amayse to execute for sponsor GoDaddy. Really curious to see how this looks on TV. (link); Interesting read on how technology could change the NFL Draft Combine, but also how coaches evaluate & analyze FB players of all ages. STRIVR is part of the story, as is Sparta Science, both of whom leverage proprietary software & hardware to more accurately measure an athlete's abilities, tolerances, biomechanics & more. "The smartest teams might not actually want a smart combine." (link)
Also Noticed: Going to try & find this whole interview as former SEC Commish Slive said yesterday of more potential realignment, "Expansion for Power Five is on the back burner with a very low flame." (link); From AD to sushi restaurant owner.
