Families could pay up to £20k for probate

A steep rise is coming in court fees for probate applications

Last year the Government held a public consultation about increasing the fees payable when an application is made to the Probate Registry for a grant of representation.

A grant from the Probate Registry is often necessary to allow a deceased person's assets to be dealt with properly. The process is often referred to as 'getting probate'.

There was overwhelming opposition to the Government's proposals but the objections where overruled and the new charges are coming into effect in May this year. The minimum charge will be £300 and many families will have to find thousands of pounds out of their own pockets to pay the Government's charges.
