March 2017 FAHU Newsletter

President's Message from Ken Stevenson

Much like FAHU’s Day on the Hill this year, the NAHU Capital Conference provided members with a few firsts.  It was the first time there were over 1,000 attendees.  And it was the first time I could remember that NAHU provided a specific game plan rather than simply asking for support on certain pieces of legislation.  Janet Trautwein and the Legislative Council came up with a concrete and specific plan on how to stabilize the individual health insurance market.  This was something members have wanted for a long time.  And as a member of the Legislative council, I was proud to be a part of it!

The day after NAHU formally announced its plan at Capital Conference, The Trump Administration announced proposed market reforms that were remarkably similar to those put forth by NAHU.  So if you are wondering who the new administration is listening to, I think they answered that question.

In addition, Janet Trautwein testified before Congress on February 1st.  If you haven’t listened to her speech, I encourage you to do so on the NAHU website (click here for direct link).  Her testimony not only laid the groundwork for stabilizing the individual market, but talked about the importance of doing things in the right order.  Yes, there is much work to be done.  Yes, the cost of health care is the major problem.  But unless we get the individual market stabilized, we may never get a chance to fix the other problems.  It’s that serious.  So we must do things in proper sequence.

Now that our two major legislative events are over and the business of 4th and 1st quarter are done, I’m planning on visiting all the chapters.  March takes me to Dade, Broward and Central.  I’m anxious to see what you are all up to.  In addition, April 7th is our Leadership Training in the Orlando area.  We need all future leaders there so we can help you prepare for your duties as chapter or state leaders.  The FAHU board will meet in the morning and training will take place right after lunch. Email us if you're interested in more information about attending.

What a great time to be a member!  Your voice matters now more than ever.

Education Report – Michael Teller

Thank you to all who have been giving and attending our FAHU school CE’s.  You’re doing a great job!  Some Good Stuff to Know About Giving or Attending Insurance CE Courses:
The State DFS continues to randomly audit CE courses. If a state auditor shows up to your CE course, don’t panic; just give your course as usual.  It’s always good to follow these basic state CE guidelines:
1. Make sure you give the same course number filed for that day and time and please give your course on the date and time filed.
2. Follow the approved course outline.
3. If using a PowerPoint (or similar) presentation make sure it follows the outline approved by the state for the course.
4. Handouts can only be the approved CE outline or other DFS approved CE materials.
5. If the PPT was not submitted to and approved by the state, do not give it to the attendees as a handout.   **CE’s filed through the FAHU school do not have their PPT’s submitted for state approval. We only submit the outline.
6. Non CE approved materials should not be provided to attendees during the CE.
7. Marketing and advertising materials should not be handed out or placed on chairs or tables.
8. Do your best to start the CE on time.
9. All attendees must sign in before the CE starts. If an attendee is not licensed or interested in receiving CE credit hours, they still must sign in.
10. If the attendee signing in is not known to the school official (instructor, sign-in person), then an ID must be checked.
11. The doors must close when the CE starts.  Late arrivals do not receive credit.  Partial credit is not given.
12. Attendees must stay for the full class to receive credit.
13. Attendees must remain in the classroom during the CE.
14. An hour of CE time is 50 minutes plus a 10 minute break. (2 hr CE = 50 min class, 10 min break + 50 min class, 10 min break).
15. Meals should not be served during class time.
16. Relax and try to have some fun with the info.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT – Broward County AHU
Devin Furlong, President

The Broward Association of Health Underwriters is excited to keep the momentum going from the success we have had the past two years. As the 2015 & 2016 NAHU Chapter with the most New Members and 2016 NAHU Chapter with the highest percentage growth, we have set the bar high. To continue driving value to our members, the BAHU board has put our focus on providing relevant education and networking opportunities at our events.

The year started off with our BAHU Carrier Expo where our members had the opportunity to speak directly with each carrier representative in preparation for renewal season. The next monthly meetings followed with topics like HSA Rules & Regulations, DOL, ACA, FLSA Compliance Updates, Group or Individual LTD Policy?, and Understanding Effective Plan Management. By leveraging speakers like a former Deputy Associate Chief Counsel for Employee Benefits at the IRS, an ERISA disability attorney and having relevant CE courses we’ve been able to drive consistent attendance and non-member guests to our meetings.

For the second time in 8 years, health insurance will undergo change. To help our members and their clients stay informed, BAHU sent representatives to FAHU Day on the Hill in Tallahassee and NAHU Capitol Conference in Washington D.C. This year these events are especially important as with change comes the need for timely and factual information. To keep our members informed we are excited to have NAHU CEO, Janet Trautwein speaking for the third year in a row at the BAHU Annual Expo (April 13th). With Janet’s involvement in D.C. and her recent testimony before the Senate on market stability and options for ACA repeal and replacement; we are looking forward to her Washington update at this year’s expo. BAHU is also fortunate to have NAHU’s President Jim Stenger speak at the expo on the value NAHU brings to our membership and community. With so many changes in our industry and so many NAHU events happening in Florida this year, The Broward Association of Health Underwriters looks forward to providing continued value and resources to our members.

We are excited to announce the first annual memorial golf tournament in memory of my late mother, Deanne Carol Keim. The tournament will take place at Gulf Harbour Yacht & Country Club on Saturday, May 13th @ 1:30pm. It will be a scramble format with a shotgun start. Anyone is welcome to play in the tournament so please let your friends and family know about the cause.

My mother passed away from pancreatic cancer in January of 2016. It is my goal to raise as much money as we possibly can to contribute towards pancreatic cancer research. According to the American Cancer Society, for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival rate is 20%, and the five-year rate is 7%.  Every dollar will make a significant difference towards future research to help increase the chances of survival. All donations will go to the Lustgarten Foundation. The Lustgarten Foundation is a not-for-profit organization created in 1998 to advance the science related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer. 100% of every donation they receive goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

Please contact John Keim @ 239-229-6375 if you are interested in helping towards the cause. Each hole sponsor will have their company logo on one of the tee boxes.

Tickets will be $100 per person. This includes a round of golf, goodie bag, and dinner at Doc Fords. You can also mail a check to Randy Keim @ 11321 Longwater Chase Ct, Fort Myers, FL 33908. Please include name of golfer(s) with check.
