"Shattered Dreams"
 Exploring the unknown.......

This last month I've been very busy working on a commission of four dogs which I shall look forward to sharing with you in due course.  I can however share with you another project I have been working on.  For a while I have been wanting to try something new and experiment.  It's so easy to get stuck in your comfort zone and continue to do what you've always done.  However learning is something that gives me huge satisfaction and I decided it was time to brave!  I knew that I wanted to draw a picture of a tiger.  I took a photo of the back of a tiger a while ago when visiting the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent and as soon as I saw the tiger in this position I knew I wanted to recreate it somehow.  I loved the fact that it showed off his magnificent stripes and for me it was symbolic that soon we will see the 'back' of tigers as sadly there are far to few of them left in the wild.

I was going to draw it in my usual style but I was feeling inspired to be more creative with it and show how fragile their existence is.  As you can see in the picture, I have glass shattering with the tiger print on to symbolise this.  Not only did I decide on a more abstract design, I wanted to make the picture larger than I normally work at 40cmx60cm.  I know how time consuming using pure coloured pencils is and thought it was about time to experiment with watercolour pencils.  They have always been a bit of a mystery to me and I wasn't really sure how it would turn out!

I invested in some Caran D'ache 'Museum Aquarella' pencils and I have to say I'm not disappointed!  I have been pleasantly surprised with what you can do with them.  I found they gave great colour when dry, and being able to mix and blend them together by adding water is like magic watching what happens! I added some of my usual colour pencils over the top in places to get more depth and detail.

Once I'd finished I came to the conclusion that the glass didn't look shiny enough for me and I decided as it was an experimental piece I would try painting on some gloss medium to create a different effect.  Unfortunately it doesn't really show up so well in the photograph, but I was pleased with the shine it has created when the light shines on it.  Overall whether the picture is peoples cup of tea or not, the important thing is how much I loved doing it and being creative.  I will definitely continue to explore watercolour pencils to see what else I can create.
TIP OF THE MONTH
I love this quote by Dr Seuss as it's so true.  Don't be afraid to explore your creativity and experiment, what's the worst that can happen! This month, try something new whether it's a new medium, different style or a new subject matter.  Remember, if you don't like it doesn't matter it's all part of learning.  You never know, it might just turn out to be the best thing you did!

Print Winner.......

A massive thank you to everyone who took the time to sign up to receive my monthly newsletters.  To ensure that a winner was selected at random, I put everyones name into a basket and got my little boy to pull one out for me!

The lucky winner was Susan H, congratulations!

For everyone who didn't win, don't worry they are still available for purchase on my website.
I plan to run other competitions and promotions later on in the year for my lovely followers so you might get lucky then.
