Management Time: Who’s Got the Monkey?

William Oncken, Jr. and Donald L. Wass - HBR

Who's got the monkey?

When a colleague catches you in the hall (or on Slack) and asks you a question. A natural response is "let me get back to you about that". You may be telling yourself that you need more time to give a thoughtful response.

Your colleague has just given you the monkey.

In this classic HBR article the authors delineate different buckets of time. This article proved particularly relevant and helpful for one of my clients this week, so I wanted to share it with you.

Side note: enjoy the time capsule transporting to you a pre-email era of business.

The Pie Life: A Guilt-Free Recipe For Success and Satisfaction

Samantha Ettus - Book

Are you ready to dive into a new way of understanding work-life balance? It is time to better understand how to *easily* set yourself up for sustainable success. While geared for women, this book is helpful for anyone who feels pulled in different directions.

Meet the Inventor of the Electronic Spreadsheet | Dan Bricklin

Dan Bricklin - TED

While I'm getting nostalgic, I thought I would share with you this TED talk on how Microsoft Excel came to be. As someone who has great respect for pioneers (like those featured in Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything), it is wonderful to see how simple it can invent something of value when you have the right intentions and mindset.

It’s Hard Enough Building a Startup — Why Should You Care About “Doing Good?”

Susan McPherson - Toa Life

How can you weave social consciousness into an already overwhelming list of priorities? From certain angels "doing good" may actually resolve some issues rather than raising more.

This article reminds me of a case study I read in one of my first classes at Business school. It outlined how a business (that owned an office building) noticed its employees rushing out just before 5pm every day. Eventually someone put two and two together...one major driver for leaving was getting home to their pups.

This Man Makes Founders Cry

Jessi Hempel - Back Channel

Helping people get in touch with what is under the surface is part of what got me into leadership coaching. I believe we are all getting in our own way, whether we realize it or now. Jerry Colonna has built a wonderful reputation for being able to get to the heart of the matter. Integrating coaching skills into leadership roles is on the rise. While I don't suggest you aim to make all o your direct reports cry. I do see a link between curiosity, compassion, the ability to listen and effective management.
