Friendship and Survival in the Shadow of War

A detective story, an exploration of human relationships, a political investigation of shifting power in the Middle East, or a riveting tale of courage? Deborah Campbell deftly weaves these myriad strands into the fabric of solid reportage and compelling first-person storytelling in her most recent book, A Disappearance in Damascus. Campbell was working in Syria as a journalist in 2007 when her Iraqi guide and interpreter, Ahlam, was snatched up by the secret police. Her engrossing account details her attempts to find Ahlam as Syria hovers on the brink of civil war and total chaos.
