President’s Message

Greetings to all our new and long time members,

We would like to thank Frank Lennartz for his demonstration of painting a lovely landscape of the beautiful and calming country town. He took us step by step through his process from drawing to a nearly finished oil painting, as he gave us ideas about where to find inspiration to paint California landscapes.

Our March presenter is Tim Smith, an LA based painter and muralist, who is going to teach us about paper. His presentation for Strathmore Artist Papers is titled The Essentials of Paper, and for anyone who paints with watercolor, pastels, or draws, this will be a very informative session. I am looking forward to learning about the influence of the fiber, weight, texture, surface, grade and permanency on our paper choices. His demo will even include the history of paper, and environmental concerns about paper. We will also be treated to some free samples, so don't miss it. It's sure to be a very informative session for all of our attendees.

Be sure to get your submissions in by Monday, March 6th for the Spring Member's Only Exhibition at McGroarty Art Center. Take in is scheduled for March 16th and pick up on March 25th. McGroarty staff has informed us that they have received the T-panels which will enable us to hang more pieces. Helena Bowman and I visited the center to view the panels and they are very nice, tall, carpet covered panels with a new wire and hook hanging system that should make it easy to put the show up. It's sure to be a great show in the classic stone and timber McGroarty house. What art work of yours have you imagined in this beautiful house?

IMPORTANT: March will be our last meeting in the Citibank Community Meeting Room due to the bank branch closing effective March 31st. Our new meeting location beginning with the April 13th monthly meeting will be at BMAI, 2228 Florencita, Montrose, just a few blocks from our current meeting location.

Be sure to get your new GAA ID card when you pay your membership dues(were due in Jan.), which will be valid till the end of 2017. Make sure you are ready for our members’ show and other activities.

We are working on new exhibition locations, including the Armory in Pasadena, the Burbank Arts and Culture Center, and Glendale Community College. If any member would like to help with these endeavors or learn how to find exhibition spaces, please contact Diane. We also need members who love playing with computers to help with our website and our newsletter. This is your Association and the more people help, the more fun for everyone.

See you at our next meeting on March 9th at the Citibank meeting room for our party.

Happy, productive painting,
Diane M. Carter.
