Chair's Message: Craig's Corner

Despite the cold weather, spring is just around the corner! I'm itching to do some spring trips, and I am sure that many of you are as well! Spring is one of my favourite times of the year. Long days, stable snow (hopefully!), and thick ice make for fantastic travel in the mountains!

I'll be throwing a few of my spring trips up on the schedule in the next few weeks; if you've got a trip going on and are willing to add a few more folks to it, feel free to do the same!

A note about our Crevasse Rescue Refresher for you... we're offering it this year at the cost of camping for the weekend: $60. Come on out with your friends and practice your crevasse rescue skills! If you think your skills might be rusty, there will be plenty of volunteers on hand to help you sort the systems out!  Details are below!

As always, have fun out in the mountains! Don't forget to tell us all about it!

Families With Kids

Don’t know any other families in the ACC? Want to meet other families interested in getting out? Want to organize some family outings? I’ve been talking with several interested people and it seems there might be some interest in various families meeting each other.

To this end, if there is enough interest, I will organize an evening for families to get together, meet each other, and maybe begin planning outings together. This will be kid friendly and completely informal. Going out with other families can simplify your ability to get out, enjoy yourself, and have a great time watching your kids enjoy themselves.

If you are interested please email me, safety@accedmonton.ca.

Peter Knight is a 27 year old weekend warrior from Edmonton. Weeknights, he can be found in Edmonton's river valley. Weekends, he is often in the mountains. Along with being a mountain bike racer in the summer, Peter has been a member of the Canadian Ski Mountaineering Team since 2012 and has attended the bi-annual world championships 3 times. Speed traverses are a great way for Peter to cap off a ski mountaineering race season.

Urban Valley Trek

New for 2017, Bryan Hyshka will be leading folks through his favourite trails in Edmonton on a "Valley Trek" Series from January through to March. Valley Treks are long walks designed for nature lovers and cover mostly multi-use and single-track trails. We end in the same place we start so you can choose your own distance and turn around whenever you like.

Plan for 4 hours of walking, on average we cover 14km with breaks for rest and chatting. We will go rain, shine, mud, sleet, or snow so dress for the weather. Bring yourself some water and a snack if desired. And, if you are looking for a good workout or training session, bring some extra weight in your pack!

Details of each trek are provided below. Please RSVP for treks using the form here: https://goo.gl/forms/MJ8YIghuuO0n4cva2.

MS Bike Tour

Recently put on the schedule is a club training group for the MS Bike Tour set for June 10-11. Once the weather improves for road cycling, a series of rides will be set up prior to the weekend of June 10th. These rides will both help you prepare for the two day 180 km tour and/or prepare you for a busy summer of mountaineering. If you want to join these training rides, please email David Zemrau.

Informal Climbing Night

VIRG Every Thursday 8:30pm-11pm
First one is tomorrow night!

Join fellow ACC members for an informal Top Rope and Lead Climbing night at VIRG (Vertically Inclined Rock Gym). Jackie will be on the main floor by the stairs meet the group there at 8:30pm. If you're late just look for Jackie (the friendliest person ever with dreads sprouting out of her head). We will climb as a group / break into groups based on skills and objectives. Jackie will lead stretching afterwards to keep us all limber and hopefully injury free!

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BELAY / LEAD BELAY CHECKS AT VIRG ALREADY - this allows us to spend the night climbing and not getting people sorted out with safety checks.

VIRG is not offering this as a member's night for us - all rates / fees apply. VIRG offers rentals for shoes, harness and chalk bags if you require these. If you are a first timer to VIRG you will need to do a waiver and a belay check - the belay check must be done before coming to one of these events.

Trip Report

Snowy Mountain Ski Camp
Also known as Global Weirding Week 2017
Photos by Lloyd Wolff

Our week of sillyness began on a Sunday morning in Blue River, BC. Strapping boxes of food, kegs of beer, duffels of clothes and two sombreros to large toboggans, we got ready to sled into our home for the week: Snowy Mountain Lodge.

Preparing to tow in

After several mishaps involving lost sombreros, we reached the end of the good road and send the sleds ahead without riders. Setting out on skins and skis, we shortly caught up to the sleds. The 80 cm of storm snow was making tough travel, and we had to split loads to reach the hut.

Abandoning precious cargo

The terrain around the lodge was fantastic, with some routefinding required to avoid the many cliffs and rolls that characterized the runs. Steve showed us around on the first day, and treated us to a fantastic run called "Gobsmacked".

Nights spent in the lodge were really enjoyable. Great food and good company in a cozy building! Our after-dinner tradition was to go to the custodian's yurt and listen to radio chatter from surrounding operations. Steve's ability to imitate the radio users provided great comedy!

Taco Tuesday with Snow-geritas

When the Pineapple Express rolled through, we did our best to stay entertained. 40 mm of rain did dampen spirits a bit, but we passed the time and were up in the alpine soon enough enjoying the fresh snow that had fallen there.

More enjoyable post-storm skiing

All in all, we had a fun week away from the city in the solitude of the Cariboos. Make sure to check out our winter camps for next year! We will be announcing these in the coming months!
