2017 Board

President

Sandy Wirtel
Dear Members,

So much to talk about, so much golf to play. Have you signed up for Leagues yet?  Much work and negotiating went into the formulation of those leagues designed to give all our members the best opportunities to find something that would suit them.  We relied heavily on the survey conducted earlier to try to match the needs of our members with our league offerings. Thank you Latecia Mills and Shelly Amundson for your work. Note: I'm mostly playing at Deer Creek if you care to join or to avoid!

Next: Our partnership with GreatLife KC allows EWGA members to use the corporate discount and to play their courses without additional league fees. (Hence the reason I'm mostly playing Deer Creek!) It's a win-win--my favorite thing.

Finally: I can't wait to see you all. And I hope I will at Spring Tee Off on April 8 at Drumm Farm.

Sandy!

 Spring Leagues Registration
Leagues Filling Fast!

Registration for 2017 spring leagues opened on March 8 and many members have already registered.  Leagues fall into three categories:
  • Early bird leagues - 4-week sessions preceding traditional leagues, starting as early as March 27. Registration ends March 19.
  • Traditional 8-week spring leagues - 8-week sessions with play starting April 24.  Nine weeknight leagues are offered this year!
  • Weekend, Pay-as-you-go, season-long leagues - These span spring and summer. They include Saturday Sycamore Ridge, Match Play Traveling, and Member/Guest Traveling leagues like last year, but also a new Sunday late afternoon league at Shoal Creek.
Five leagues are being held at GreatLife KC (GLKC) courses, and dual members of EWGA and GLKC will be able to play for no or greatly reduced greens fees, depending on GLKC membership level.  EWGA KC members also receive a monthly savings of $30 on their GLKC Classic Plus level membership. Contact Leagues@ewgakc.org with questions or to get the GLKC discount code before completing spring leagues registration.

See more Spring Leagues detail.

We will NOT be performing league registration or membership sign-up/renewal at this event since both are already available online and early bird leagues will have already started.

Five Events in 30 Days!

EWGA KC has held the following five events since the February newsletter:

Kansas City Golf Show
February 17-19

Approximately 20 members volunteered to work the KC Golf Show and staff the EWGA KC booth.  Our new chapter brochure was distributed and over 50 booth attendees requested further information about EWGA.

Ronald McDonald House Charities
February 24

Ten EWGA KC members and guests prepared a meal at Ronald McDonald House Charities to feed families traveling to Kansas City to receive medical treatment for their children.

Match Play Basics Clinic
February 25

A two-hour clinic on match play was held at St Andrews Golf Club, presented by EWGA KC Director of Golf Programs, Latecia Mills. It covered the rules of match play golf as well as match play opportunities within EWGA.

Missed it?  See the full presentation complete with rules differences, scoring examples, terminology, requirements, opportunities, and more!

Wee Bit o' Winter Golf
February 25

Nine members decided to brave the cold and played 18 holes at St Andrews Golf Course with temperatures in the 40's. Sunshine and camaraderie made for a good afternoon of golf.

Saturday Pop-up at Sycamore Ridge
March 4

Ten members played 18 holes at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course on a windy Saturday afternoon.  Board member Sue Bradfield birdied 3 holes in a row!

See more photos from these and other events.

Don't miss out on future pop-up events, which may be scheduled with relatively short notice. Event information is made available at:
  1. Facebook:  EWGA KC Metro
  2. Chapter website:  ewgakc.org
  3. Meetup.com:  meetup.com/ewgakc

Birdie Tree
All EWGA KC members are invited to be recognized on our Birdie (or Better) Tree. If you score a birdie, eagle, albatross, or hole-in-one at any EWGA event (EWGA league, EWGA outing, or other EWGA sanctioned event) during the 2017 golf season and submit it, your name will be added to the tree and you will be eligible for a prize at the season's end event.  Scores can be submitted and admired at ewgakc.org/birdietree.

Volunteer Opportunities

Meet new people and deepen your EWGA friendships by volunteering!  We have openings for volunteers to help with the following events:
  • Spring Tee Off (April)
  • Play for P.I.N.K. (September)
  • Sponsor recruitment
Please contact Sue Bradfield to participate in any of the above.

We are also seeking a Golf Education Chair to facilitate education events set up by the Golf Programs Director.  Responsibilities are similar to that of a league captain. Please contact Latecia Mills if interested.

Member Survey Results

Thank you to the 79 individuals who completed the Member Survey conducted this past December and early January.  68% response rate is simply outstanding and has already been very helpful to the Board as we plan the new golf year.  We have applied your feedback to league offerings as follows:
  • continuing early bird option at existing leagues
  • continuing 18-hole Saturday traveling league
  • expanding 30 minute skills clinics to 3 different spring leagues
  • expanding Match Play offerings to include a 9-hole Monday evening league
  • adding hole prize competitions and other games across all our spring leagues
  • expanding leagues in North, East, and midtown areas.
In general, we are offering more leagues, more formats, more education, and more areas of town.

See all survey results.
Golf Education

1.  Golf Mentors Needed!

Mentorship is an important aid to beginning golfers.  Teaching Pros all over the metro look for ways to ease the transition of new golfers from the lesson tee to playing on the course.  We’ve all benefited from mentorship as we took up the game of golf.  Help grow the game and pay-it-forward by making yourself available to mentor new golfers.  This roster will help the Education Chair  know who might be available to help with a mentoring request. We’ll be talking to area pros to make them aware that we have mentors available and will contact members on the roster to identify mentors for specific opportunities.

Who can be a mentor? Mentorship is not about teaching golf swing techniques or knowing all the rules of golf.  Mentors help beginning golfers understand basic etiquette during the course of play and is informal.  This is about easing the beginning golfer’s anxiety as they start to play on the course. If you’ve been playing for a while, you can be a mentor.

First mentoring opportunities (all at Overland Park Par 3 course, mentoring beginning golf students of Maureen Olson):
  • Friday March 24, 11:00am-1:00pm
  • Friday April 14, 10:00am-noon
  • Friday May 12, 10:00am-noon
Put your name on our Mentor Roster to participate in this program which not only helps beginning golfers, but also helps our chapter and gives you a couple of hours of fun while giving back!  You might make a new friend.

For questions, contact Latecia Mills.

2. "Breaking Series" Classes

Maureen Olson at Overland Park/St. Andrews has rolled out a terrific new program for 2017 to help you break your personal glass ceiling on the course.  Whether you’re trying to break 110, 100, 90 or 80 – the main things that need to be addressed are your mental approach and expectations, which will be addressed in each class.  A 5% EWGA member discount is available.  Just tell Maureen you are with EWGA when you register!   Check out her Breaking classes, each a series of 4 classes – Breaking 110, Breaking 100, Breaking 90 and Breaking 80.  Classes are taught at St. Andrews Golf Club. See more detail.

3.  Pre-League Clinics

In response to feedback from the recent Member Survey, we have added 30 minute skills clinics to 3 of our Spring session leagues – Tuesday night Heart of America, Tuesday night St. Andrews, and Wednesday night Minor Park.  These clinics will take place from 5:30 – 6:00 pm for the entire 8 week Spring session.  These clinics are optional and are pay-as-you-go.  Your league captain will identify participants for each week’s clinic.  The clinics are appropriate for new and/or intermediate golfers.  Cost is $10 per person per clinic and are paid directly to the course.
