Persistence Can Lead To Working Happy

Persistence – ugh! How often, when you feel you can’t go on, are you advised that further persistence is necessary in order to get where you want to be?

What is it about persistence? When you know where you want to go and how to get there, why does time get in the way? There is no ready answer, except that sometimes, life asks for your persistence and dedication in order to succeed.

When you persist, there are some benefits. You learn and grow along the way. You increase your commitment to what you are doing. You build strength. Perhaps persistence is a means, not an end.

Here are some tips for the next time persistence is needed and you think you have no more left to give:
  • Give yourself a brief break and re-center –physically, mentally and emotionally - and then continue.
  • Nurture and acknowledge yourself for sticking with what you are doing.
  • Give some thought to options you have to proceed and decide if there is a better way to do what you are doing.
  • Rededicate yourself to your goal.
Persistence, when valued and honored in your life, can be a powerful ally. Get comfortable with it and do your best to see the advantages it can give you.

What's Up For You?

We love answering your questions on your journey to working happy!

Q: I worry a lot and am beginning to realize the toll it takes on me. My worry is an energy drain and distracts me from doing what I want to do. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with worry?

A: You are right, if worry is anything, it is a distraction from your present reality. Worry brings you into the future and out of the present moment. Bravo to you for wanting to lessen yours.

A way to start, is to examine how worry “serves” you. There is always a reason for why we do something, whether a positive one or not. Does worry’s distraction allow you not to deal with something that is happening now? Is worry a way to channel your anxiety about something? Does worry get you some type of attention that you want to have?

When you find yourself beginning to worry about something, stop and bring yourself to the present moment. Get yourself out of the future and what may happen, into what the present reality is and what you can do about it.

What do you have to lose by stopping your worrying? Not a lot. Move towards leaving no room for worry in your life and you will soon see the benefits of doing so!

Tips
  • When you notice that things are out of balance – stop! Do not let the imbalance go any further.
  • Trust your instincts. As soon as you “feel” something is wrong, stop and reevaluate.
